***Official*** West Indies in New Zealand 2013/14

Cotterell? The guy who was getting biffed around at 6rpo in the warm up match? And as for Narine, this is not a spinners pitch. Shillingford getting biffed for 15 in one over by the NZ #11 is evidence enough of that.
Yep I'm more aggrieved at Rampaul and Holder being left out of the squad all together than them selecting Gabriel over Cotterell. Though tbh Sheldon has a lot more going for him in terms of wicket taking potential (better seam position, more pace, taller, swings the new ball a bit) and Gabriel was so bad at Dunedin that I think they should have gone with him instead.

Dammit, no rain forecast either. How many rain affected tests in a row at the Basin is that now? Wellington dragging cricket through the mud yet again.

New Zealand are now in an excellent position, but it has to be said this pitch looks pretty ok to bat on now. The number 11 was hitting through the line ok there.......

Get through the new ball and we should be ok I reckon.
Number 11s have always and will always get away with hitting through the line occasionally.
Actually, I don't think he really was hitting through the line too much. He put away balls on leg stump and short, wide filth.

That's really no indication whatsoever of how the pitch is behaving.

300 is par, IMO.

Boult has always looked very solid with the bat to me apart from when he went up against steyn, which is somewhat understandable
His first few innings he was slogging everything and was looking good. After that he tried to play defensibly for a while and was a walking wicket (iirc england home and away an example of this, of course good bowling factors in as well)

Tomorrow is meant to be the day we get occasional showers as well so this test might be down the gurgler if this keeps up.

Nice to see another series ruined by rain.
Can't help but think of the last West Indies tour - the single worst rain-affected tour in recent memory. Both tests badly affected and three or four of the five odis too (we were lucky to come out on the right side of D-L I think). iirc domestic cricket was barely interrupted all over the country too; the rain just followed the international matches.

Anyway, the forecast is still not too bad for the remainder of this test.

Yes no-one is denying he's done well of late but the problem is he's conceading far too many runs!!..good spinners know how to shut down an end, but shilly bowls the same way all the time and when the wickets don't fall he's just ends up being expensive. Narine had three poor innings and was dropped!!..it wasn't fair on him and i still maintain that he's the best spinner we have where talent is concerned.
From a nation whose had a holding option as a spinner for the last however many years, trust me when I say you'll take a guy who can bowl you to victory, and leak a few runs when the conditions don't favour him, over one that generally goes at 2s but hasn't sniffed out a final-day pitch in a long, long time.

Hmm so we might have 2 days of actual play to take 20 wickets, but if the West Indies can score something decent quickly (would need Bravo and/or Samuels to get going and a Sammy Slog) they also have a bit of a crack at inducing a capitulation on the last day.

I hope this is the last of the rain and it holds off tomorrow because we could be looking at another draw here.

It's looking a lot brighter now (looking from next to the Beehive sun has come out).

It would be good for my optimism if we could trigger a nice 4-5 wicket collapse after tea with some hooping swing. Need to get in early to account for the inevitable resistance down the line.
