Evidence so far suggests the correct answer is b), but a lot of people are going with a). There's a weird idea going around that all of our players coincidentally transformed into pumpkins the moment Ferguson left.

I've found Liverpool quite impressive this season but they're not actually in great shape given their fixture list. They'll need to put in some serious performances to still be in the top four come January. Spurs are sort of the opposite, probably actually doing better despite having looked much worse.
I'm no big Moyes fan but he consistently got a weaker squad than this into the top 8. It's not just that simple.

I think Moyes's biggest mistake was dumping all of the coaching staff. I'm still not sure what he was thinking there, maybe he was a bit paranoid about being undermined. It's a bit like taking over the most successful business in the company and immediately firing everyone and replacing them with your cronies.
It's one of those bizarre things in football. It happens in business as well, but not to the extent that it does in football.

Yeah he did but then I doubt anyone believes that 9th is our "true" position.

How good a job he did at Everton is sometimes overstated though. Their spend was the 7th highest in the league and their position was normally around about 7th. That was also achieved using various tactics that just don't work at a top club. Thus far he seems to be trying to transfer some of those tactics over, particularly the overly negative match tactics at times.

Yeah but look how the same players play under Martinez. You could argue Moyes stifled them like he is stifling Man U. The long ball game and lack of pace in the United side is telling in the games we have seen this season and that was how Everton used to play. On Wednesday Martinez's side were much slicker in midfield as were Newcastle yesterday. Not all down to Carrick being injured.

Yeah it sort of ties into the idea of "managing skill" as a fixed resource, when that's not how it works. You can be great at managing one club but terrible at another, like Clough at Forest/Leeds. Or you can be bad at it at first, but then get better.

I don't think he's an idiot or anything, but you can't deny that he's been extremely bad at his current job so far. To go back to Furball's point, he's definitely been bad enough at it to end up missing out on the top 4.

Yeah ultimately I think it's adaptability that's the key. He's not a bad manager but is he just good at what he does, or did, rather? Or does he just need time to settle?

It's still the bottom line for me, Man U are one of the biggest clubs in the World, does anyone think Barca, Real Madrid, or Bayern would have considered Moyes as manager?

I might have seen a more low-profile appointment, a la Shankly/Paisley, if the guy was indoctrinated into the ethos of the club. Yet he seems to have done a Souness and ripped out the heart of the club.

Never mind looking at the big foreign clubs.

In the last 5ish years, Man City have changed their manager 3 times, Liverpool have done it 3 times, Spurs have done it once and Chelsea have done it 7 times. Moyes wasn't linked with any of them.

Levy dismissed him as a candidate for the Spurs job because he thought he was too negative.

Supposedly wants out, doesn't he?

Mind you, so does van Persie, allegedly...
He does, and I can't really see Moyes off-loading RVP to Arsenal, would be madness.

The problem with this striker you want in the transfer window is surely you need an immediate impact to sustain your title run. Bringing in Morata or Klose they may take time to settle into the League. Surely makes sense to get someone who won't be cup-tied in Europe, and knows the division. Even if he is a frustratingly lazy bastard.

The whole point of signing Klose is that in theory he should be able to settle into the side on account of playing with Özil and Podolski numerous times for Germany.

Yeah, it's a risk in terms of settling into the league but he'd be coming as back up, he wouldn't be expected to be starting games or anything. Giroud's fine, we need someone better than Bendtner to give Giroud a rest now and then/take over if Giroud gets injured.

Jurgen Klopp might tho...

Fav to take over or so I read today.

Get ****ed.

On a slightly related tangent though, was thinking last night that Arsenal should also have a run at Kagawa to replace Rosicky.
