1st day of the test is only overcast and that is what I am going to. Second day due to bucket down apparently.

Anyone know if any thought is being given towards playing cricket in Forsyth Barr Stadium?
A quick google gives the field dimensions as 131m x 81m. If the pitch was in the very centre of the stadium that would give 40m square boundaries......

Looks like it's a no go then

The ICC's playing conditions stipulate that the boundary rope must be at least three metres away from the fence/advertisement hoardings for safety reasons. It also says the shorter of the square boundaries should be a minimum of 59.43 metres and both the straight boundaries should be at least 64 metres. According to the playing conditions: "In all cases the aim shall be to provide the largest playing area, subject to no boundary exceeding 90 yards (82.29 meters) from the centre of the pitch to be used".

Yeah, nah. With all the stadium controversy and so many people against it, my only criticism was not catering for cricket. Missed a trick there. Ugh rugby is the only important sport apparently.

who would you recommend as an economical third seamer
I wouldn't mind my idea of picking Neesham as the third seamer. Might mean Anderson has to bowl more, but between the two of them we're getting more wickets than Wagner, and certainly more runs.
fmd reading earlier in this thread, and also other threads in general, it's like people have no understanding of what a bowling attack should be. The third seamer should be in the top 3 seamers in the country, not some halfway there he-might-score-some-runs serviceable seamer. This is not ODIs, your third seamer isn't there to be economical, he's there to ****ing take ****ing wickets for ****s sake. He actually has arguably a tougher job than anyone else because he hasn't got a new ball and might be facing some now-set batsmen.

Batting only comes into it when you're playing two spinners and the third seamer is an all-rounder.

Look I agree. But Gillespie has done nothing to shout down the roof. Ideally Bennett would be there, but he's not even in the picture.

And I think when you're playing 5 bowlers - yes, I think Anderson is a viable bowling option - there's justification for including a bowling allrounder as the third seamer. We did it with Cairns, for example. Flintoff would've also been a good example except England erroneously batted him in the top 6. Especially with Williamson bowling, there's a greater share of the 3rd seamer's responsibility.

We have to face up to the fact that noone near the national setup is a particularly penetrative bowler.

would you give wagner another go? do you think we might benefit from having some fresh legs instead?

The issue is all our blokes in the Southee/Boult mode have been going great guns for a while now whereas our hit the deck blokes like Gillespie/Butler/Bennett etc have either fallen off the wagon or injured themselves. We've tried to manufacture swing bowlers like Bracewell and Wagner into archetypical third seamers but the powers that be are finding out the hard way it isn't an overnight process. I'm a big fan of Milne being the third quick because he merges pace and bounce with swing both ways (though I haven't seen him bowl the outswinger in a while so maybe he shelved it). I know he isn't the finished article yet but he is one of the best options. Bartlett also should be in the reckoning because he hits the deck with good bounce, has performed reasonably well though his WPM could be higher, and has stayed fit.

Any news on Kane for the 2nd test. I have googled it and can't find any articles mentioning him and the 2nd test.

Bennett is one of those bowlers who always seems a much better prospect when you're not watching him play, because while he's been effective this season he isn't pretty...
