Way to go about conveniently ignoring the rest of the post.Cumming and Papps weren't Sinclair and Fulton either, but they were (or are in Papps's case) better than Redmond. Not only do they average a few points higher but they reached the sorts of heights you'd expect from a dominant domestic player in individual seasons that Redmond has never really done; Papps had a season averaging 91 and Cumming put two consecutive seasons together averaging over 60. Redmond has not done this sort of thing; his highs simply haven't been as high or prolonged.
You're right about Cumming, but if Cumming was picked before he'd done that then I would've said similar really. Redmond has a chance to "do a Cumming" and go down as more than just a pretty good domestic player if he really piles on the runs in the next few seasons but until he actually does that, forgive me for not getting dem feels over a pretty typical domestic player in a purple patch getting a Test. It may well be true that it's the best option (I don't even really agree with that much) but I think it's a bit far to go on about how deserved he is and how he's earned it based on weight of runs. He's earned on based on weight of short-term form.
The romanticism was entirely the point of all my posts on the matter though. If you don't care about that and that isn't the point you're making, then you're the one ignoring the point given it was you who quoted me in the first place.Way to go about conveniently ignoring the rest of the post.
Papps is not better than Redmond. Declaration bowling hundreds aside, all his runs have come from one day cricket. Papps is a true front foot hero, and if he played today he's one of the few batsmen lying around who the Windies would put under pressure with this short filth. I've already shown you Redmond's achievements as a specialist batsman, which are on par with Papps and Cumming.
I don't really care how you feel about the romanticism, because feelings have nothing to do with the point I'm making so don't try and paint me into that particular corner. I don't really care about it either, but to say Redmond was not the best option is reminiscent of all the Cantabrians insisting Papps would average 50 in test cricket on talkback radio before that series against South Africa.
Anyway he's gone now so you're free to slam the selection with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight.
Seems a long way away all of a sudden, with Taylor's jittery start and McCullum's abysmal form. If neither of them fire, it's all on Fulton, Anderson and Watling. So what do we think is par score on this? 350-400?
I have a feeling Broom will be a no test 'what if'I wonder if Broom has any regrets about opening this season right now. If he'd been in the runs as a #3 he could well have been picked in this match.
That would be such an NZ-on-a-flat-pitch score. 250/3 half an hour before stumps too.6 for 280 at end of play?
Back in my day when someone got a tribute match, or was selected as a one-off replacement based on weight of runs, or whatever you want to call this.. they averaged more than 35 in First Class cricket.
Just seems a bit cheap to me, and all the feel-good comments about a supposed domestic "champ" being given a game is something I can usually get right behind, but Redmond is.. Redmond. He'd had his moments and purple patches but he's not been a special player at domestic level across his career. The commentators are annoying me about it more than anything else really. He ain't no Sinclair, Fulton or even Cumming or Papps.

think it's pretty clear he would've gone for Papps.Alright then PEWS, I'll indulge you - if not Redmond, who would you have picked to bat at 3 in a one-off Test before KW comes back?
Had somehow forgotten about Broom, I guess because he's only played one FC match this season so far. Would have fitted nicely into the uninspiring Redmond-Latham-C.Chops-outofformBrownlie shootout for this 3 spot. Broom seems to have a knack for going missing at exactly the time a NZ spot frees up, like when Brownlie was injured and there were no clear takers for the 6 spot against South Africa at home.I wonder if Broom has any regrets about opening this season right now. If he'd been in the runs as a #3 he could well have been picked in this match.
As Flem said, the short ball would probably have been his downfall.think it's pretty clear he would've gone for Papps.
