I really don't think Edwards should play if he's not going to bat in the top three. Not just my Deonarine love talking either; Edwards is a specialist top order batsman if ever I've seen one.

I would have all 3 in my squad to give us flexibility. I agree that Edwards is a number 3 batsmen, so his role is as the reserve top order batsman with a solid FC record. Narsingh can be the number 6 batsmen unless we decide conditions require 5 bowlers, in which case Dwayne would come in at number 6 and offer a half decent 5th bowling option. To me that would be the logical selection and best use of our resources. It gives us so much more flexibility than the current squad which is hamstrung by Sammy's presence.

Btw I think Miguel Cummins is a better prospect than Cotterell because he can get the ball to move both ways off the seam and is quick enough at around 140kph. But I think the selectors will go with Cotterell for pure pace reasons.We'll see though.

Yeah, I agree with this. Deonarine's a serious bowling option at home and arguably in the subcontinent but he's not going to be that in New Zealand so he should be in a dog fight with Dwayne Bravo for a place depending on the balance needs of the side. Edwards should only be considered to bat in the top three, but you do need a reserve top order bat on tour, so your squad was fine.

Broken Thumb Hurts Williamson's Chances | Stuff.co.nz

The form of three candidates will be monitored closely over the next two weeks with Kane Williamson likely to be ruled out of the first test against the West Indies.

New Zealand Cricket is expected to make an official decision on Williamson's broken thumb after he sees a surgeon this week but the classy batsman is thought to be a long shot to recover in time for December 3's test in Dunedin.

It's a risk and reward scenario with Williamson, who is unlikely to get the required preparation before the first test. The future captain is a vital part of the team and rushing him back at the start of a long summer makes no sense.

"Kane is probably the biggest worry at the moment with his break. Are we likely to run out of time, that's the question," NZC general manager national selection Bruce Edgar said. "You have to be right as a player, both mentally and physically."

Dean Brownlee, Tom Latham and Aaron Redmond are all in contention for the first drop position, but Edgar confirmed Jesse Ryder won't be considered for the series.

"At this stage it's too early to consider Jesse for the tests," Edgar said. "It's about stepping stones, making sure he's comfortable with where he's at. The New Zealand XV game is just to give him a taste of being back at that level, back in the frame and back in the New Zealand environment.

"Having discussions with him, he's not ready yet. We're waiting for him to be comfortable and have some consistent performances."

Ryder is more likely to be considered for the first ODI on Boxing Day at Eden Park.

Ross Taylor will find out tomorrow whether he'll be ready for the start of the West Indies test series later this month.

New Zealand's senior batsman has been troubled by a patella tendon injury which he picked up a fortnight ago. Taylor skipped the limited-overs trip to Sri Lanka, which continued last night with the third and final ODI in Dambulla, the idea being to prepare for the West Indies with some red ball cricket.

He will see a specialist tomorrow to determine whether he is ready for Central Districts' Plunket Shield game against Northern Districts in Hamilton, starting on November 26. The first West Indies test starts in Dunedin on December 3.
