His contract expired. A lot of the United fans seem to think he decided to leave because Ferguson didn't give him game time. I think it's the opposite and he didn't get game time because he wouldn't sign a new contract. He was always very positive about Ferguson in interviews, said he wouldn't even have thought about it for so long if it weren't for him.

Juventus probably offered him more money and maybe he fancied living there. With youth development you sort of count on players feeling a connection to the club and it doesn't seem like Pogba had that.

Suppose if his mind was made up you can't do much but could they have tried harder to keep him?

The whole team functioned much better with him in there. The media's on one of its "Rooney is God" binges though. He's actually had quite a mixed season, poor again last night.

Big test for Arsenal tonight. Won't get many games this season that are more difficult than this, I suspect.

Yeah but a loss should not really have an impact on what they are doing in the league. Going to Dortmund is definetly harder than going to Old Trafford at the weekend.

It certainly is on paper, but we all know that Arsenal have a tendency to perform poorly against Utd, especially at Old Trafford.

A defeat today wouldn't be a disaster, but it would make qualification to the knockout stages really dodgy. Would pretty much have to beat Napoli away, and that's not exactly an easy fixture either.

Yeah Champions League qualification is looking extremely dodgy, it's quite obviously the most difficult group and a real shame that a good side is going to miss out. You might get the experience of the Europa League though, must be years since you enjoyed that.

Yes, I distinctly remember the last time I 'enjoyed' that particular competition. It involved Davor Suker and Vieira missing penalties - a thoroughly miserable evening.

What did actually happen with Pogba and United? Seems ridiculous that they let him go.

Rooney has never really been good as a Support Striker away from Home in European matches. He just tends to pass it wide and get in the Box.

Kagawa looked much better whole of 2nd half compared to the 1st i thought, even on the left at the start but particularly central. But tbf, the game by then was stretched with Sociedad trying to get a win and Van Persie and Ashley Young (Shock Horror) having bright introductions helped too.

I want to see Kagawa more in that role before being fully convinced though, especially against more organized premiership teams as there is where he has struggled in the past especially when they get physical with him. All his better performances coming in European competition even from the left this season.

On another note, United's finishing last 2 games against Sociedad has been so bad.

Missed 3 clear chances yesterday and plenty more in the first game at Old Trafford. Hit the bar like 5 times in the 2 games IIRC ? Dunno, how they managed to score just 1 goal over the 2 games on the whole and even that was a Own Goal.

It's a fairly difficult group, but I disagree it's the most difficult. I actually think the most difficult group is United's, even if it does lack the "glamour" (for want of a better word) of a side like Dortmund, who are obviously better than anything in our group.

Apart from Dortmund, Napoli are a decent enough side, but I'd rather have them in my group than either Leverkusen or Sociedad, who the press seem to have decided aren't very good for no apparent reason. And Shakhtar, who have long been incredibly underrated, are still a vastly superior side to Marseille despite not being as good as they were a couple of years ago.

Arsenal are by no means certainties to qualify from their group but I think they'll probably get through.

Nah, with all due respect you're just wrong. I'd argue that Napoli were better than Bayer and Marseille are better than Sociedad. The latter pairing being pretty similar at worst. The idea you'd rather play Napoli than Sociedad is just ludicrous. Then obviously Dortmund are probably the best side out of either group.

I'd say Napoli are more formidable than Sociedad, but not to the extent where it's ludicrous to suggest you'd rather play the latter than the former. I disagree with Halsey insofar that Utd's group is the most difficult, but I see what he's getting at.

Marseille aren't close to being on the same level as Shakhtar, let alone Sociedad. There are even far better French teams around compared to Marseille who were incredibly lucky to stumble their way to 2nd last year, and have been very average this year. Sociedad on the other hand deservedly came 4th last year in a league far tougher league. The Spanish league's lack of depth is sometimes cited with some justification, but it's still far stronger than the French league; Sociedad beat Lyon 4-0 on aggregate just this season for starters.

As I said the press seem to have decided Sociedad are not very good for no apparent reason; they've lost a fair few games this year but mostly to teams that would beat most sides in Europe. They've lost to Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, United, Shakhtar and Rayo Vallecano. Only the last of those isn't a very good side although admittedly they probably shouldn't be losing to Shakhtar at home either. The rest are all games they can scarcely be criticised for losing and they've otherwise looked pretty impressive this season IMO.

Leverkusen have looked just as impressive as Napoli have this year in a far better league, so I think them being better than Napoli is honestly not that close. Shakhtar are incredibly underrated by a press that I assume rarely watches them play, because anyone that has watched them play in the past five or so years would have realised they were a very good side. Until they sold a couple of their key players I'd honestly have had them as a top ten side in Europe. Obviously not as good now but still a very decent side.

If Arsenal were even as short as evens when they go away to Napoli then I would gladly snap it up, barring an extreme change in form for one or both of the sides between now and then. I doubt it would be necessary though as I imagine they will be quite a lot longer.

EDIT: To give some kind of reference, I think Leverkusen are just as good as United and our 4-2 victory over them was Moyes' best moment so far. I also think Sociedad aren't far off as good as us and due to home advantage I made them favourites before the game kicked off last night. When the group was drawn I thought there was a serious chance of us going out and there still is a bit of a chance obviously.

The presence of Dortmund in Arsenal's group instantly makes their group harder.

Sociedad are pish this season, sure they got to 4th last season but they also sold their best player for €30m and couldn't re-invest that in the side because they, like every other **** in Spain, are ****ing skint.

Napoli and Leverkusen are much of a muchness, so your argument seems to boil down to Shakhtar being roughly equivelant to Dortmund. Which is mental.

Real Sociedad were fantastic back end of last season but they are not playing anywhere near that well this season, they are far from awful but would say Napoli are comfortably better.

Similarly I think it is generally accepted that this Shakhtar is not as good as we have seen in the past.

When the draw was made I thought United had a very tough group but none of the sides have been that impressive from the games I have seen from them.
