Say what you like about Woy, and obviously I hate the central midfield, but with first Welbeck, now Sturridge and Townsend he has tried to pick players with verve and energy up-front. I think Rooney probably appreciates it.

I was referring to Andy, and his 'loving the idea' of someone trying to chip the goalkeeper from 18 yards out whilst the keeper is about 5 feet off the line.

I know his hand has been forced to an extent (the two **** centre backs who aren't available) but aside from your midfield peeve he has actually been quite forward thinking in terms of the players he's picked for me. The old guard he's gone for still deserve to be there, even if not necessarily at the same time, thinking Gerrard, Lampard, Cole and well that's it really unless Rooney is old guard and well tbf he was probably established in the side before Lampard.

Well, I've never thought he was terrible, just a bit uninspiring, if they had to pick an English coach, he was the one with the obvious and relevant experience, by far the best choice. Hard to get excited about though. Some of his quotes have been awful though, but it ever was with England.
4-1, flatters us a bit, but as I say think we deserved to win.

Yeah I was thinking this too. I really, really thought he was going to go with Milner on the right tonight but he made the right call with Townsend and it paid off. It's not the first time he's been a bit more progressive than I was expecting, he's done pretty well since the Euros, got most things right.

Was listening to Harry Redknapp on Talksport the other morning rabbiting on about his new book - said some very gracious things about Hodgson (as he would of course) but I got the impression he genuinely thought the right man got the job

He is doing ok. I was relieved that Milner wasn't in the line up and Townsend was superb last night. Be a shame if he gets hounded out of the job by the press raising expectations to an unreasonable level if we do qualify. Reaching a quarter final would be a very good effort with this set of players and people need to remember that.

Obviously Feo being out forced Woy's hand slightly, but it would've been very easy to play Milner (my thoughts on whom are probably a matter of record), so it was heartening to see youth being given its head.
It retrospect it will look like the most obvious of calls, but giving a player a debut in such a crucial game is inherently risky and the 'Arry brigade in the London based meedja would've been only too keen to tear Hodgson a new one if it'd gone **** up.

Well quite. I came across a piece in one of them on Wednesday saying that Hodgson would have to go if we don't qualify whilst also acknowledging the complete dearth of viable alternatives. I must admit that I hadn't considered the possibility of Redknapp being seen as a contender nowadays, but doubtless I'll be proved wrong as and when England do foul up under Hodgson.
Yup, he deserves huge credit for picking Townsend, more for his role in the first goal than anything else, as we seldom looked like breaking through before then. I must admit to switching to HIGNFY for the first 30 minutes of the 2nd half, as I found us unwatchable for most of the 1st. The usual stuff - slack passing, no intelligent movement for the guy in possession, weak control, etc, etc. With the old guys in central midfield looking especially culpable. Anyway, Tuesday should be interesting, especially for those of us who were watching in 1973. My guess is if Poland go a goal or two behind they'll lose interest, but that may not be easy to achieve.
