BBC Sport - Jack Wilshere says only English players should play for England

This whole debate is getting well ahead of itself in my opinion, but I am curious to see what people think about this.

So far as I'm concerned I wouldn't have a problem for him playing for England if he had moved here with the intention to play for England all along. But the fact that he's stated he's going to wait and see, and pick and choose which nation he feels like declaring himself for at a later date does seem to make a mockery of the entire thing to me.

Same as the cricket debate, innit. Just please pick one and stick with it.

I can sort of understand Januzaj's wish to wait and see though, because of the whole Kosovo mess. Maybe he wants to represent them and sees himself as a mercenary anywhere else. Just get them into Uefa already, has more of a claim and a zillion times better footballers than ****ing Gibraltar.

Agree the whole thing is premature, don't think he has made any signal that he wants to play for England has he?

I heard that he wants to play for Kosovo but for obvious reasons that is not possible right now so that is why he is waiting.

Yeah, so far as I can see, the only people who have even raised the issue are people in the FA setup and, of course, the press. I feel a bit sorry for the guy actually, he's become the centre of this silly, and increasingly emotive, debate through no fault of his own

All of this because some kid scored two goals against Sunderland. Imagine the reaction if it was actually happening like the Diego Costa situation.

This Cardiff story is rather more entertaining as far as I am concerned.

It is pretty hilarious. It's even worse than if they hired someone whose only experience was playing football manager. The best thing is not only that the guy has no experience in football whatsoever, but that he was last employed to paint the stadium walls a few months back.

I wonder if there has ever been a 23 year old chief scout for a top tier sporting team in any sport before. I imagine not. Will be great to see how this pans out.

8-)

It's probably inevitable that KP should end up having a say in all this, but it strikes me as highly ironic that he of all people should be giving it Barry about the commitment of 'foreigners' playing for England. It's not like his dedication to the England cause has ever been called into question, after all.
In fairness, KP's selection would have been far less controversial if he'd been a footballer.

It's a moot point anyway, Januzaj won't ever be eligible for England unless the FA want to open a can of worms by disregarding the agreement with the other Home FAs.

One of the many reasons I hate International weeks, the press have to fill the pages somehow. There was a stupid story last time too, which dragged on wasn't there?

Can't remember what it was now, which probably shows what great moment it had.

KP wanting to be the centre of attention is odd though isn't it?

On an international note, anyone care to venture opinion on what the future holds for Roy if England don't qualify? Will be getting his p45 surely?

Tbf to KP it wasn't really an aggressive tweet. Felt he raised a good point tbh.

Always found it mildly embarrassing the way football acts like it has some sort of moral high ground on other sports in England on this issue.

There was an article in the Telegraph yesterday which basically said that it's ok for Saffies to play in the cricket team as they helped England win the Ashes but there would be resistance in football until you bombed out of the WC again then all bets would be off

Nah, if a South African with an English mother came over at the age of 20 to play for Chelsea and he turned out to be quite good then no-one would bat an eyelid if he was called up go play for England.

Yeah you'd have to think so. They'd have to balls up pretty badly not to qualify from here though. Montenegro and Poland at home.
