Interesting and varied lot of seamers there, will be interesting to see how they get on. Moeen Ali to be the main spinner obvs.

It's not really a match series they go for. It's meant to be an intensive training unit for a month or so with a couple of games against average opposition in there to keep people interested. They'll probably turn up to net with the senior team occasionally like they did in Perth last time.

Poor old Compton.

Rankin - meh.

If Root opens Ballance at 6, don't want Root opening tbh but that'll mean Carberry who i have a feeling would sink rather than swim, then again he could'nt do much worse than Root (the pressure free 180 aside) did in the series just gone.

England simply can't afford to be 30-3 every test again, no way we keep getting away with it this time.

The most glaring thing in the squad is G-O in the alphabet not covered at all. The jump from Finn to Panesar is alarming.

The Carberry selection is really weird. I can only speculate that they think his technique would flourish in Australia relative to other countries, which is a stance I believe Pothas has held for years now.
I certainly thought so when the last ashes tour squad was picked but he was also coming off the back of two excellent seaons at the time. I also slightly worry from the little I saw of him in the recent ODIs, that he maybe a little too anxious to succeed, rather like Compton in fact. I am really pleased for him, especially after the health scare that he went through a couple of years back but can't really justify his inclusion over Compton.

No complaints about Ballance but it is now very obvious that England do not rate Taylor at all and that Onions test career is over.

Understand why they have picked Stokes but I really hope he does not play, really not ready.

One thing is for sure is that Gary Ballance has got a great chance now to bat at 6 during the series. Probably competing straight out with Bairstow with the more unlikely options being either Root(with Carberry opening) or Stokes.

James Taylor left out again. Hopefully like Onions he signs up for a franchise or team somewhere and scores some runs and experience in foreign conditions because that's the only way he's gonna convince the selectors - more runs in conditions like SA would be ideal. Possibly NZ or SA would be best. Woakes also should sign somewhere to get some cricket.

Thoughts in no particular order.

What's the Performance Squad for, if not for potential players like Stokes? He looks a better prospect than Woakes at least. I'm ok with his place as a last throw of the dice sort of plan but I hope he doesn't play.

If Onions won't get any movement I agree there's little point to him. He's been terrible every time he's been in England colours lately and flat tracks are no excuse when it comes to Australia selection.

Ballance has just recently shown his moves beyond minnow bashing. Worthy but not quite as worthy as Taylor.

Worries about 30/3 seem a little over reactionary. Cook and KP were apparently going to be a problem last time after a lean summer, the idea didn't really stand up to scrutiny.

Carberry must have been going regardless of his one-day performances, which leaves you wondering why he was picked when he could have been playing for Hampshire and Australia's Test bowlers didn't play the ODIs.

If players like Vince are in the Performance squad, where's Hales?

Has Rankin ever played properly outside Europe before? Does he keep his pace in the long form, because Finn doesn't. Not that many people seem to have noticed.

Get well soon Tim.

Think Onions should have been playing. His record indicates he is one of England's best bowlers. Division One, he's quick enough, there is no excuse not to pick him.

Vince has over 1000 runs in the county championship this season at just under 60. Hales does not. (I feel like Scaly)

Understand the general point though, there are certainly limited overs specialists in there

Where is Ravi in all of this? Must have his own squad status surley?

Players like Woakes, Onions, Bopara, Taylor have all been through the performance/academy/lions squad enough times to know how it works. It's good that they're told to go and find they own cricket over the winter and develop their own game.

Two players I'm slightly disappointed aren't in the performance squad are Scott Borthwick and Laurie Evans. I've been extremely impressed by Borthwick's batting this summer. Seemed really organised and disciplined in very tough conditions. His bowling has gone no-where and I'd look at him more as a batsman now. Maybe he's been through the lions enough and he's the same as the above group. Evans always looked like he had the talent but he seems to have really broken through this season. Looks technically good and is decent to watch. Both scored very good runs in the first division.

Ravi is an limited overs specialist, doesn't need to go on any squads to Aus to practise that.

Happy for Rankin, has bowled well when he has been fit for the Bears and his line/length/pace/accuracy all very impressive in the ODI series. Tremlett a horses for courses pick, but no matter how you slice it Onions is very unlucky. England proving again they don't care about CC stats.

Ballance is a strange one for me. Why didn't they pick him for the ODI series if they were considering him? Letting Trott get some red ball cricket in the meantime wouldn't have hurt either.

Taylor/Woakes not being in the performance squad are shocking omissions, and doesn't bode well for them. Also surprised that there is no place for Laurie Evans. Danny Briggs being there showcases our lack of depth at spinner.

Note on the performance squad is that Wood/Overton aren't going on tour they are staying at home for strength and conditioning.

The more I look at the squad the more I am concerned. No proper back up to Anderson at all and 4 big quicks. Why no Onions instead of either Tremlett or Rankin.

As for the batting, well Compo is unlucky as is Taylor but Carberry and Ballance are good players. The rest is as expected with Stokes in for Bresnan as is sounds doubtful he will be fit enough.

I presume that Broad, Anderson and Swann will do the same as last time and miss the last game before the 1st test and go ahead to Brisbane so it will be a straight fight between the rest for the 3rd seamer role.

Good news for Australia and I particularly love Pringle's summary of Ballance - good player but doesn't like short stuff

Who the **** is going to bat 6 if that is the case?

Like the squad.

The basic elements, which I'm confident will suffice to win the series, are strong and known.

The additional players all work for me.

Carberry is flat out a better player than Compton (18 months ago the idea that Compton, after several years as a very ordinary County player, would have been mentioned for elevation would have been laughed at).

I haven't seen much of Ballance but he appears highly rated. The likes of Taylor still have time.

I like the Stokes pick. I reckon if he moved to a County with pitches less helpful to bowlers it would improve his all round game but I was told last year by one of the FC umpires that he's a real talent. If he could be a strong No 6 batsman and good 4th seamer that would be very handy.

Monty is clearly the 2nd best spinner atm.

Rankin has impressed me, Tremlett has form in Aus and Finn is the right pick (a player, like Bell, who attracts a ton of unfair criticism). Onions never looked like a long term Test prospect to me, especially overseas, but is given an easy ride by some on here.
