***Official*** New Zealand in Bangladesh & Sri Lanka 2013

There are 4 players in the current A tour also selected for the bangladesh test tour, but the last ODI of the A tour finishes the day before the warmup match in Bangladesh. It will be interesting to see how they manage it.

Perhaps some of the Otago boys return after inevitable early exit from CL?

Probably Bangladesh's best chance to win a Test against a top 8 team. About time they won one. It's been 13 years...

Yes, looks more than a little harsh on Astle. Interesting that we get two different accounts of which of Sodhi and Astle performed well depending on whose report we read. Do we trust mildly interested but unbiased foreigners in Wisden India or do trust the ND-lovers who've already made their decision and want to make it appear rational?

Reading between the lines I'm also concerned that Sodhi is going to be expected to bowl flat and quick and keep it tight, which cannot be good for his development. He's not the biggest turner of the ball in the first place.

Despite all this I'm excited for Sodhi and would like to see him at least play the second test (unless we lose the first). On the topic of picking players very young (as was debated a few pages ago), I'm far more in favour of picking raw but talented bowlers than raw but talented batsmen, due to the differing natures of batting vs bowling. Though this is tempered somewhat by injury risk for young bowlers.
Never trust the domestic coaches, especially the ND "Cameron Merchant will play for NZ within two years" mafia and Jamie "booming through the crease" Siddons.

ND are deadset becoming the new ****erbury for bias at high levels.

Five I think: Anderson, Sodhi, Latham, Gillespie, Bracewell. Two will leave early, PEWS' Flem's dream of Tastle batting up the order will come true in that last A match.

Bangladesh bowling attack will probably feature Gazi- Shakib- Razzak- Robiul- (insert any random pacer). Razzak despite being a **** test level player might get the nod ahead of Enamul and Elias Sunny because of their lack of form. There was a 3 day practice match between Red and Green Team arranged recently and Sunny wasn't selected which might be a big hint. Mashrafe is only just coming back from injury and bowled some spells in the match but I don't think he will be properly fit for a test match and don't know if Nazmul is fit or not. Shahadat was left out and rightly so. So that leaves Rubel, Shafiul or Sajedul to partner Robiul or they might select Zia who can bat as well. Then there is curious case for Mahmudullah and where to place him if selected. Team composition could be-

1. Tamim
2. Anamul
3. Naeem
4. Mominul
5. Mushfiq
6. Shakib
7. Nasir
8. Mahmudullah/ Zia / Random bowler
9. Gazi
10. Razzak
11. Robiul

Cricket: Umpires to pick teams
By Andrew Alderson
5:30 AM Sunday Sep 8, 2013

Cricket umpires might do more than judge dismissals, count deliveries and assess wides and no-balls this summer.

New Zealand Cricket's new national selection manager Bruce Edgar intends to canvass their views as the closest neutral observers to the domestic game.

"Obviously we'd go to major association coaches, but umpires are at each game observing batsmen and bowlers close at hand. For example, I want to know how a spin bowler reacts when he comes back for a second spell after getting hit in the first. They're likely to have a feel for what's happening on the mental side; feedback you might not get from afar. Someone on the ground might say 'yeah, it was jagging around a lot, the guy left (the ball) well, then went on the offensive."

Edgar is looking to spread his resources as wide as possible. Match referees are likely to be employed this summer, in addition to two talent-spotters. Those roles have been advertised; Martin Crowe and Glenn Turner did the jobs last year.

It's expected the talent spotters will recommend names to Edgar and coach Mike Hesson, with Hesson retaining the power of veto.

Edgar and Hesson also used the observations of NZ A coach and former test spin bowler Grant Bradburn to select their squad for the upcoming tour to Bangladesh.

Bradburn's former Northern Districts charges Corey Anderson (22) and Ish Sodhi (20) were picked after strong form on the development tour to India and Sri Lanka.

Edgar's concept is not new. As chairman of selectors, Sir Richard Hadlee once revealed that he sometimes consulted veteran commentator Bryan Waddle.

Edgar's predecessor, Kim Littlejohn, and the former director of cricket, John Buchanan, introduced the "selection pie chart" in 2011. It was designed as a means for picking international, provincial and age-grade level teams.

The pie was broken into categories with various weightings such as significant performance, consistent performance, contribution to the team, fitness and fielding. Selectors' intuition was granted a minimal five per cent.

An alternative system of assessment was launched by the New Zealand Cricket Players Association in association with NZC in 2008.

The Most Valuable Player gave players a ranking in relation to their peers based on batting + bowling + fielding + captaincy + winning = total MVP points
I like how Alderson put that. I also look forward to a poster called Bootsy joining CW. :p

Lesson the First: Northern Districts will absolutely put cows in your drinking water and let you deal with a problem further downstream. They will use their profits to speculate on sections with excellent potential to be rezoned onto the NZC contracts list before too long; former NZ U19 standouts in areas of nationwide weakness.

Cricket: Potential pitfalls loom large - Cricket - NZ Herald News

5. Preparation is everything

Scarred by a poor build-up to last year's West Indies tour, there appears to be a focus on acclimatising to the climate and pitch conditions. New Zealand start a nine-day pre-tour camp in Sri Lanka on September 22 followed by a three-day warm-up match in Chittagong. The first test starts October 9. "We don't want to be exposing them for the first time in those conditions. We want players who have already worked out a method of trial and error to get by in the subcontinent," Hesson said.

Yup, when you have a young and inexperienced team and you're ranked last, you need to take every tour seriously and give yourself every opportunity to get used to the overseas conditions.

bangers will be backing themselves here. If I were a neutral I would slip $10 on them if the odds were good.

I would like to hear a lot more from AndyZ in this thread about the feeling within Bangers supporters and how he rates their chances.

Bowling attack is the best I've seen from us in quite some time. Clearly missing a quality batsman or two though, and Guptill's absence just makes it even worse.

yeah. Not sure how they'll go in Bangladesh with just NcCullum as the spinner, but there's some serious bowlers there.

3 allrounders is somewhat less than our usual 6-9, so that's good.

Personally think Devcich looked good on the A tour, but the policy should require domestic runs as well and he simply hasn't got them. It's just not good to reward players who haven't really done anything to deserve selection.

Devcich has looked like his usual learn-nothing slimy self on the A tour. This panel can piss off if they're going to pick meretricious players and do some Orwellian **** on the term "cricket knowledge" to justify it.

Hugely disappointed to see Latham picked as the number 1 keeper, especially given that he was not keeping for NZA, I really hope Latham makes it as an international player, but the way he has been pissed around by Canterbury/NZC i see him being mightly confused.

Considering Guptill is injured, Ronchi played like ****, Ryder's still not ready and McCullum's keen on batting in the middle-order we really have to be realistic here. Devcich isn't good, and most likely will fail. But considering Rutherford is another opener in this squad and he's only scored 382 runs @ 19.10 in his entire List A career, the Devcich selection really wasn't that bad (990 @ 34.13).
