he seems to be in denial though at least publicly...
"I struggled throughout, which is not very satisfying... I kind of feel like I beat myself, without taking any credit away from Tommy. Clearly he was making sure he was making many balls. It was up to me to make the difference and I couldn't."

Interpret from that what you will. To me he is basically saying during these losses that he's not making the shots that he usually makes and should be making. Age has to be the reason.

he is only talking about that one loss though, not the longer-term decline that's going on...i have yet to see him admit to that...

Fed is clearly past his best that is obvious. What is glaring is how and when he is loosing. Loosing to Djoker, Rafa and Murray or even the seond tier (Berdych, Delpo even David) is one thing, to loose to Robredo in the fourt round is another, especially what happened at Wimbledon. He just isn't Roger anymore and if things don't turn around next year he needs to seriously look at retirement before his legacy is futher tarnished.

He is actually in serious danger of not making it to London, that would be tragic and actually sad.

I was agreeing with you. He is listing the reasons for him losing as him not performing or playing at his best. But then not stating that age/decline is the reason why this is occurring.

Such a massive wtf at Ferrer losing that 5th set to Gasquet. You'd think that Gasquet would have crumbled after giving up a 2 set lead, and Ferrer would have absolutely rolled him.

Meanwhile Rafa vs. Robredo was the stinker everyone assumed it would be. Thanks a lot Fed!

I wish commentators/pundits would stop saying Wawrinka is having the 'game of his life' here, he's been playing like this for most of the year.

It has to be pretty worrying for Murray that his second serve is being demolished quite to the extent it is. It's always been his weakness but Wawrinka is preying on it perfectly. A telling stat that Murray hasn't earnt a single break point in nearly 3 sets, Stan's serve is dominant.

Best I have seen Stan play. Murray had no answer. Be great if Stan played Gasquet in the final just for a change, can't see either winning their semis though.

Does anyone actually think he's tarnishing his legacy? The most cited example of this seems to be Muhammad Ali, but his legacy is barely tarnished at all.

I'd like to see him go on playing, I think he adds a lot to tennis even if he's not one of the best in the world anymore. But I think he might quit too soon.

Yeah, I've never understood the tarnishing argument, bit different in a Team sport, because you could be said to take up a place of a youngun. Yet in individual sports it doesn't hurt.

People call for the retirements because it makes them feel a little uncomfortable, but who the **** cares about you.

Connors became even better renowned for carrying on guttsing it out, when he was well past his best, the Pernfors match at Wimbo, one of many that was great theatre. Hewitt is also doing it to an extent.

If he's healthy, let him carry on.

Its not even if he's healthy. If he's enjoying it let him carry on.

Completely agree with you both.
