Isn't 300 a wee bit too less?
Depends if/how much they think it's going to rain really.

A loss and a draw are essentially the same thing for Australia at this point so the chance of losing is irrelevant; they just need to maximise their chances of winning. That doesn't mean they should declare really early obviously because if England chase down the target 9 down with an hour to spare after a declaration then that declaration has actually cost Australia the game but if they think it's going to rain (and there is rain forecast) then 300 could be the magic number.
