Why'd they place the leg gully and short mid wicket then?
I initially thought Australia were trying to push Cook back with the stock ball, then bring him forward for the nick off while driving. The leg side fielders there for protection when Starc strayed onto his legs, but I guess a leg gully and short mid wicket is more attacking than that.

they gave up on getting cook edging didnt they. so they decided to attack the stumps and got protection in. late swing, lbw chance, goes dead on, there's a mixture of protection and catching fielders

Was part of the plan to lull him into a false sense of security by letting him score 60 runs before unleashing plan X which was carefully put together over copious cups of coffee and cigarettes?

The only middle ground I will concede is that maybe Clarke just thought he would try something different on the spur of the moment.

If they try it again next inning and earlier in his inning we will know for sure.

And yet there they were...

Look maybe they have a few plans for a each bat. Cook was doing well so why not try something else? As has been said the fielders were there for a different type of delivery. Even if the ball that got him was an accident the intent was their in the positioning of the fielders. Unless you're thinking they just walked inTo position? In which case you'd have even more reason to be incredulous wouldn't you?

Btw who cares if they were put there as part of a plan or on the spur of the moment? Why is that even raised as an issue?

"Slightly risky if you don't hit it", bumble perhaps forgetting it's Haddin not Wade behind the stumps

Whites team due to be announced in 12 minutes. Lets hope KP isn't too distracted wondering whether Koumas will be involved.
