Good point about Agar's bandaid. Shouldn't be allowed either.

Swanny was hardly in plain view - hunkered down in the shadows behind the drinks cooler!

Forget whatever it's called. I'm surprised you'd advocate it. It opens a pandora's box in my opinion. Spray on silicone rubber for the slips fielder's and spinner's hands? Vaseline on the bat edges? Hard plastic pads for the batsmen to make the leg byes fly?
Yes, he was. If they had anything to hide they would do it during a break or one of the numerous times a bowler sprints off the field of play for an over.

Sticking with the ball here.......is it wrong to shine the thing on your trousers?? How about rubbing sunscreen, sweat, saliva (mint induced or otherwise) hair gel or any other thing you can think of onto the ball?

At the end of the day it is all artificial manipulation to prepare the ball for swing...........trouble for everyone is where do you draw the line?? For instance I think it is crazy that umpires can stop a fielding side throwing the ball in on the bounce, but no one cares that the designated shiner spends minutes shining the **** out of the thing.......what's the difference??

I did see that Youtube vid of Swann in the esky with the spray can and honestly Harry, I can't see anything in it. If anything it is less dubious because he did do it out on the field......if there was anything untoward about it he'd go off the field to commit this heinous crime.

Aussies......never beaten, only ever cheated out of wins LOL.

Jimmy is the most underrated superstar!

Adam Gilchrist: 'England reliant on James Anderson'

BBC Sport - Ashes: England reliant on James Anderson, says Adam Gilchrist

This is utterly hilarious. Are the Aussies forgetting that they would have suffered a 100+ run pasting if it weren't for the random heroics of a 19 year old debutant?
It is without a doubt that James Anderson has been the most significant fast bowler for England in the past 10 years. His consistency across all forms of the game has been a huge factor for England's success. While he hasn't been considered amongst the top fast bowlers in the world, his impact is without a doubt huge for England.
He did his bit in India even though the spinners took over. So while England need him to get a victory, I don't think it's imperative that they over rely on him!

Go Jimmy!:D

The way the media and the Aussies are going on about this you would have thought this is the first time a bowler has ever taken 10 wickets to win a match!

I thought Warne saying on SS News yesterday that the Aussies will take more from the match than England was the best spin since Ted Dexter's "lines of Venus were in the wrong juxtaposition"

Says who?? I'm sure I'm not alone in believing he is second only to Steyn amongst the worlds best quicks. And even those that would lodge a strong argument against that would certainly put him up in the top 5 surely?? I;d say that is considering him amongst the top fast bowlers in the world.

I presume he was meaning ever. Wouldn't put him anywhere near the Marshall, Hadlee, McGrath and Waqar bracket.

TBF, I think it was the way that last day panned out more than the fact he took a brilliant 10 fer. He really was the only bowler looking like taking those last 4 wickets.

I was guilty of saying after the test "No Jimmy.....No England". So if that is reliant on him then so be it..........just as well we've got him then innit:D

We already know you can't tamper with the ball. That's enshrined in the Laws of the game, so no sunscreen, minty spit, hair gel, deliberate boot spiking or pockets full of dirt. That is cheating. Thanks for bringing up the litany of past English crimes btw! ;)

You know me better than that Adders! The Poms won this match and deservedly so. When did I say otherwise? I simply asked if you were comfortable with Swanny spraying antiperspirant on his hands. It's seems a well tested ploy. Apparently he did it against the Saffers too. I reckon everyone will be doing it soon!

Nah neither would I........but he's certainly up there with the top crop of todays bowlers.
The current cupboard is pretty bare for quicks really when you consider the options. I'd be ranking Steyn, Anderson, Morkel, Siddle, Philander and then daylight.

Lot's of blokes like Patto, Broad, Roach, etc that are very, very dangerous on their day but lack the consistent penetration and durability that the others have.

Harry.......all of those above have been used since the dawn of cricket!!! And I'm sure you are not naive enough to think that the Aussies don't partake as well.......everyone is at it.

And what about shining the ball then....how is that not tampering with it??

You're right mate and that comment wasn't really aimed at you.......I know you're better than that. Made the mistake of looking in at that "other place" today and saw the carrying on about this. That probably prompted me to post that more than anything.

There is another reason for my views maybe being more tolerant than yours on this. If the ICC really did clamp down on all this stuff IMO it would be to the detriment of the game........conventional and reverse swing are a fascinating and incredibly positive aspect of the game of cricket, take it away and the balance between bat and ball is truly ****ed.

There is also so much grey in this I don't know how it could be clearly defined. Obviously no one wants bottle tops brought onto the field, or the likes of Afridi biting chunks out of the ball.........but wiping sweat or saliva on the ball?? Can they really stop that?? Swann with his deodorant, only reason it is a talking point is because it was done out on the field........how you gonna stop that in the change room?? Could you tell Ricky Ponting he is not allowed to chew gum??

A bit of common sense and yes, a degree of tolerance. is the right way to go IMO

I did a quick lookup on the most successful pace bowlers since 2010 and what do you know? Jimmy it is! Only Peter Siddle makes the cut from Australia which is a far cry from the past!

I don't think it's really fair to point out the lack of Australians on high-wicket-taker lists as a sign of lack of quality given we turned over the bulk of our attack around 2011-12.

At risk of sounding like a repetitive bore, would much rather judge bowlers on how they bowl.
