*Official* First Test at Trent Bridge

Should check out this table. Really confirms what someone said before about us losing a lot of tight matches. Crazy really.

Records | Test matches | Team records | Smallest margin of victory (by runs) | ESPN Cricinfo

If you only include matches from the modern era, that is a ridiculous 8 out of the top 10 smallest victories we have been on the losing side (England having 0 in the top 10)!

I'm not sure if this means Australian's fight longer than others and bring results closer than they ever should have been, or if South Africa's choking tag needs to be revoked.

neither tbh.

It's the fact that Australia have been pretty strong in the modern era, thus the few losses have been smaller, as opposed to big innings defeats.

we are talking about absolute marginal losses here though. The top 10 is a margin of 13 runs or less (the 10th being the loss last night).

Adders probably still out on a bender as we speak.

Great test,
I'll let you in on a little secret Pie Man. I am ridiculously superstitious when it comes to Ashes cricket, in 2005 I went through a bit of health kick and went off the piss for 6 months which coincided with the Ashes, with just a couple of exceptions I haven't had a drink through any of the subsequent series!!!...........had my last beer last Friday so am 10 days into 6 weeks on the wagon:cry:

I also haven't changed my jocks since Wednesday and have been wearing the same tattered old England ODI shirt from 2004 all week!!!

Anyone else here this ridiculous??

Edit:

Just for clarification I have washed the said Jocks in that time:wacko:

The reaction from some over here over this result hasn't been good enough. At the end of the day Australia lost another Ashes match and more than likely blew their chance for this series. Now 3 consecutive Ashes series defeats beckons. Not since the dark days of World Series Cricket has that happen.

Apparently losing is now accepted as long as it is close. This is yet another sign that Australian Cricket has well and truly lost its way. Losing is now okay as long as it was a jolly old good game it seems. Shakes head.

Finn has been dreadful in 2013, time for a break for him. Broad bowled ok but you wonder how much the shoulder is hindering him. Bresnan shouldn't come in for Lord's as he is useless there but they may call him up for his reverse ability. I'd go for Tremlett over Onions as Vaughan reckons Tremlett was back to his best against Yorkshire.
I'm assuming it's not his left shoulder.

So erm if he didnt hit it then what was the sound and mark?

Yeah agree with this. When it happened in real-time I thought he hit it. I thought it was funny that they went back to the sound to confirm it, as it's possible that wouldn't be conclusive - the sound could come from other things. Overall though I'm 99.9% sure he hit it.

Was unsurprising to see shows like 'Sunrise' running a poll this morning on whether Haddin was out or not though...they're ****ing idiots.

Finn is a bit of a dumbass bowler, much like Ishant Sharma. Tall, lanky with space to spare between the ears.
Finn's delivery stride reminds me of a baby giraffe struggling to get to its feet for the first time...might explain his inconsistency a little. There are bits and pieces going everywhere.

Being okay with losing is a pretty essential part of improvement. If you don't throw the toys out of the pram every time then it's easier to be objective and realistic about what needs to be done. Of course, if you've got immortals like Warne, McGrath, and Punter then you can do whatever the **** you want.

Even his action at the point of delivery is a bit jerky. Not saying he's chucking but it does feel a bit abrupt.

****ing hell mate, who exactly told you that it was Australia's god given right to win all the time???

The Aussies held onto the urn for 18 ****ing years.....that didn't spell the end of test cricket did it??. It just so happens that for the last couple of series and maybe this one, England have had a better team than you......that is allowed in the rules of the game you know.

It's a cycle mate, you've been **** before and you've been great before (and no doubt will be again) just so happens that it is our turn right now...........no need to be cutting off people's heads just because you've lost a couple of Ashes tests. I guess like a lot of cricket nuts here I get very involved in these contests and invest a lot of myself in them, but at the end of the day mate it is still only a game....you win, you lose, you shake hands and move onto the next one.

Your fully entitled to your opinion but really, your dour outlook on the game makes for very depressing reading, the Ashes is alive and well and we've just had a ripping contest and kudos to both teams for making it so........every Aus or Eng cricket fan should be celebrating that fact today of all days.........pack your negativity away and enjoy what we've all enjoyed over the last 5 days.

If cricket makes you feel so low maybe it is not the sport for you....or do you only enjoy it when you win every game??

Show me a happy Australian cricket fan today

Most people accepted that they had blown the test yesterday but are reasonably pleased that they at least put up a fight today

There's a world of difference between that and accepting a close loss as being good enough
