*Official* First Test at Trent Bridge

Hmm that is a sorry sight to wake up to. Went to bed when were 3 down (I think) with about 10 overs left. Feel we started to lose the plot in this chase when Cowan came in with Rogers. The batting stagnated and it allowed the English bowlers to get into some rhythm, which they just hadn't been able to with the opening partnership. Unfortunately it continued with Smith and Clarke afterwards. Really don't like the dynamic of a defensive no.3 in this side. You get all of this momentum with Watson opening and then suddenly it's lost. Warner needs to be fitted in there imo.

i wanna know what he said. something about livers.

when you lose this test how great a knock will it be then?
Win or lose it won't change the quality or significance of the innings mate. If the Aussies lose is anyone gonna forget Agars heroics, will a narrow loss diminish his remarkable achievement on debut??

Actually, who's in the box seat for MOM at the moment?? Could well change depending on what happens tonight but there has to be a few contenders in the mix.....Agar, Bell, Siddle, Anderson....time left for Broad and Swann to stake a claim too.

England are clearly in front after claiming 6 Aussie wickets.

However, the game is still wide open provided that Haddin and Agar last the first hour of play.

Certainly by lunch we should have a good idea of who is going to win as I can't imagine Haddin and co. blocking and fiddling runs for 3 sessions.

I flaked it last night an hour or so before stumps.......was there much reverse on offer at the end?? 9 overs till the new ball........is that much to look forward to?

Despite Siddle, Pattto and Starc doing no good in the first innings, that is a ridiculously strong tail.......I think too much is being made of England being in the box seat. We have our noses in front at best.

Will be very interesting to see how Agar goes, had zero pressure or expectation on him in the first innings and he milked it..........now he's got an Ashes victory riding on his shoulders. I'm not sure we'll see that cheeky grin and cute little smile too much during this second crack.

****ing hell these are long days waiting for the cricket to start.

The result would massively change the significance of the innings. The result wouldn't change the quality of the innings but it would change the value and therefore the significance.

If England win then he deserves MOM

Yeah fair call Goughy.......but as you say it was a top quality innings under pressure, if we lose that won't change.

By the end of this series I will have Uvo acknowledging Bell for the very good batsmen that he is.......it is my mission!!

Bell could be top class if he applied himself any better, he really did bat well this test
He is frustrating in that regard Max. So many times he's looked like stepping up to the next level but never seems to fulfill that promise.

I don't by any means think he is a "great" batsmen, but I do think he is massively underrated by quite a few.

Na get real...you are comfortably in front. Will be one of our best test wins ever if we pull this off now. Personally don't think it's even gonna get particularly close though.

This article by Brettig is right on the money for mine. Daniel Brettig: Australia lose openers' thread | Cricket News | Australia in England - The Investec Ashes | ESPN Cricinfo

Don't really know what Clarke's plan was tbh. I'm sure the wicket was getting slower, and runs were harder to come by than for Watson, but I don't think that explains why he was preserving his wicket to that extent. The batting didn't look that difficult and he failed a few times to put rank balls away. Having a SR of 32 is rarely going to be a good thing for you team. Maybe he was attempting to bring a draw result into play as well as the win to cover all the bases or something, but that doesn't sound like a very Clarke thing to do. Really not confident in him having a good series.

It's 137 runs to win, batsmen at the crease:
Haddin (decent ashes record, known for imploding and succeeding under pressure, experienced)
Agar (has guided WA to unlikely victories, calm temperament, natural batsman

Batsmen to come:
Siddle (solid defensive technique with shots all around the wicket, handled Indian conditions well)
Patto (attacking player with lots of shots, struggles badly against Swann)
Starceh (attacking player with shots, did allright in India)

The heavy roller will also take some life out of the pitch early on, and if England take the new ball scoring will become a little easier (surviving may not). I think the two at the crease have to at a minimum bring the target down to 80, but realistically these two must knock off most of the runs if Aus are to win. Australia a 30% chance I'd say
