Surely Martin Bicknell, Mark Ealham and Mark Illott are unlucky to miss out there?

Is you number 11 Nick Cook, the left arm spinner? I remember him often failing to release the ball in his delivery stride, like he had the yips or something. Was very odd.

Yep, we have a plethora of inept bowlers to pick from but I think you are harsh on Bicknell, had he been picked against any side but a marauding Aussie one he'd have had a very good test career. Don't get as many wickets as he did on the Oval pitches of the day without being a very good bowler. Showed that in his brief return v SA 10 years later.

Yeah it was a bit odd he wasn't picked for an entire decade. They could have done a lot worse.

Not that it matters to anyone but pedants like me, but I'm sure DKL took 167 wickets against England. Being out by 39 wickets there, I'm assuming you forgot to count his '81 series.

You're welcome.

Trevor Bailey once said very positive things about Mark Ilott, and he played against the Aussies in 1993, so I assume I can select him based on WR8/9?

Ah, I see the issue - I didn't realise you were talking about Ashes wickets as opposed to "wickets vs England".

Lillee took 167 wickets vs England, but only 128 Ashes wickets as neither the 79/80 series immediately after the end of WSC nor the two Centenary Tests actually count as Ashes matches. That's where we get the 39 wicket discrepancy, not from the '81 series (where he also took 39 wickets).

The only picks in the all time ashes side worth haggling over are: Number 5 and Number 6, and the 4th Specialist Bowler

Number 5: Chappell/Border/Waugh/Ponting/Barrington

Number 6: Border/Waugh/Miller/Botham

4th Specialist Bowler: Trueman/Barnes/O'Reilly/Davidson/Larwood

All difficult choices. Do we really need an all rounder at 6 considering Hammond is already in the side, not to mention we could have Border or Waugh to bowl as well?

Off the top of my head I'm thinking

1. Hobbs 1926
2. Cook 2010/11
3. Bradman 1934
4. Hammond 1928/9
5. Border 1981
6. Botham 1981
7. Gilchrist 2001 (?)
8. Warne 2005
9. Laker 1956
10. Lillee 1974/5
11. Tyson 1954/5

Alderman 81 and 89 worth a shout.

Also, if you think Cook was good out here last time, Taylor made 830 odd runs in 1989, albeit in a six test series.
