That is what I think you will do, Siddle, Pattinson and Harris to play the first test with Lyon and Watson as back up.If we have to front run and win the 1st test then pick the most gun attack 1st up and hope they last 5 days.
I agree with your views re HughesSurprised that everyone seems to be including Hughes in the side. Honestly from what I've seen of him (which being a kiwi, was mostly his giving Guptill catching practice) I wouldn't have him in the same postcode as Jimmy Anderson for his own safety. Does no-one think Wade might score more runs than Hughes playing as a batsman?
Have never seen Bird bowl at all, but the comments on here intrigue me. I seem to recall similar things being expressed about Copeland - what happened there?
Yeah Hughes didn't make my team but with Warner currently suspended I guess many people are picking him reluctantly. My reason for excluding Hughes is that I've seen nothing at all from him to suggest that he has improved since being shielded against South Africa late last year when Quiney played. I guess a couple of good innings in these county matches could be important for him.Surprised that everyone seems to be including Hughes in the side. Phil Hughes is one of the best batsman in Australia against domestic bowlers and attacks like Sri Lanka in Australian conditions. At 24 years of age and having now played 24 Test matches, he needs to show his ability against good bowling attacks on the International stage.Hughes had a good domestic season, albeit at Roadilade, and went OK against Sri Lanka. He's deserving of a go IMO. Not like Khawaja has been setting the world alight since they both got dropped from the side that played New Zealand in 2011. Khawaja has his own technical issues as well.
The warm up games will be an important factor though. Hope he goes well.
So lets give him a proper go to show it this time then. He's played seven tests since his recall, four of which were in conditions that couldn't be more foreign to the conditions he'll get in England. I wasn't completely convinced about his recall, because I felt he probably needed a bit longer to work on his game before getting another go, but now that he's been given one, you can't just bin him against straight away.Phil Hughes is one of the best batsman in Australia against domestic bowlers and attacks like Sri Lanka in Australian conditions. I think he will probably play when you consider what has happened to Warner and the fact that Smith wasn't in the original squad. So lets give him a proper go to show it this time then. Yeah same. Hasn't been in good form (on or off field) but he has shown before he can score runs in very tough conditions. He is definitely a match winner/turner as well.Hughes at 3 and Khawaja at 4 looks ever so enticing from and England point of view.
Despite all the off-field stuff, and the fact he has been on awful form anyway, I would be picking Warner come the first test. Rogers at 3.
He's centrally contracted to Cricket Australia and they've suspended him from playing. He can't play for anyone if they tell him he can't.Warner is easily Australia's best opening batsman for me, but it's a tricky one because he's not playing in the warm ups. I assume the ban is just from Australia games? Therefore, there's nothing technically stopping him playing a bit of club cricket in England or something like that? Wouldn't be the worst idea for me.
Constantly threw his wicket away when well set and made 1 score of note in 10 innings. He was rubbish. He was the second highest Aus run-scorer and had the second-highest average at 48, behind only Hussey. He wasn't magnificent by any means, but he was one of the few who actually didn't disgrace themselves. The next highest average was Haddin at 45, and then after that Steve Smith at 31.80, so that puts Watson's performance in some perspective. Didn't realise how badly Clarke performed...jesus...an average of 21.44. Well, beats Ponting's average of 16.14 . Bloody shocking series.
Edit: if you take away Ponting's top score, a 51 not out, which I remember was scored in the most pressure free situation and essentially his runs were not needed (batting for an inevitable draw), his average would have been 8.9! That's got to be one of the worse major series' ever by a great of the game.
