I thought I’d include this because, although it’s “only” my Fourth XI, I think it would probably be my favourite to watch. And I’m a self-indulgent prat who likes the look of his own writing.

I struggle to imagine a more exhilarating quintet of strokeplayers than that top five (yes, I know I’ve cheated a little by picking Worrell to open, but he did the job a few times and I wanted the three Ws on the same team!), the pace attack combines the beauty of Lindwall, the showmanship of Fiery and the sheer awesomeness of Waqar, and it would be great to see Kapil Dev unburdened with both bat (coming in at no.7 after that top six) and ball (not having to single-handedly carry an attack on a merciless dustbowl).

Match in, match out, over a long period against all opposition, they might only be my Fourth XI. On their best day though, I reckon I’d take them over just about anyone.

Is such an awesome explosive and ***y middle order with Richards, Lara, and Sobers. Also the team bats down pretty much to number 11.

Find your sides interesting Fred. I know you love McCabe and Larwood especially, so no surprises there.

Really intruiged to see Compton in that first XI. What is it about him that makes you pick him over some other (more standard) picks? And no Viv Richards?

Will start an initial tally shortly. Great to see the partisipation. Better than I had initially expected.

Leaning towards Monk's idea of one (1) point for those listed in third teams. Thoughts?

I forgot Hammond. Completely. Should've probably been in my 2nd XI.....

For some reason the Viv Richards that sticks in my mind is the one that played on too far past his use by date, so he's seldom at the forefront of my thoughts, although I do acknowledge that in his pomp he was pretty special

As for Compo that's probably a temporary thing having immersed myself in him to write that recent article, but I was struck by the number of his peers who wrote so effusively about his ability to improvise and make runs where and when others couldn't, and it struck me that adding that extra dimension to the batting was worth having

I'm also interested and glad that Fred has gone for flair over pragmatism and selected Brian Lara in his first XI :D

Same reason as Compo really – he could be inconsistent and frustrating, but when he was on song (and that wasn’t necessarily when he was making tall scores on roads) he just looked so talented

Spinners in each side. Perhaps I should have put SF Barnes into the 2nd XI ahead of Ambrose. Just went and changed that over.
