Absolute ****ing disgrace.

That was a no ball, but because we're New Zealand, we get ****ed over. We get ****ed up the arse with the weather. We get ****ed up the arse with the umpiring.

But, no, we actually right royally ****ed ourselves. What a limp dick ****ing chase that was. Ronchi should never have been in that position. 10 runs ffs, that could have easily been scored in the first 3 overs if a proper batsmen was in there.

If England finished liked they should have, they would have won by 50 runs. We were very shoddy in the field as well. We just didn't want to be out there, and it showed.

Pile of *** from NZ. If they can't beat this very average English side, they wouldn't have got any further in the comp anyway.
Yes I was thinking if England end up getting SA in the semis that if they can't make the final when playing at home, getting the 8th best team in the effective QF and a team of bottlers in the semi then it is a rather sorry state of affairs.

Hopefully SL bat first tomorrow as it will be interesting to see how Australia approach their chase knowing that they'll need to reach it by over X to go through

aren't England ranked number 1 or 2 or something?

the match was there for the taking by McCullum, Taylor, Guptill or Franklin, and none of them did anything.

Sounds pretty forlorn from what Lord Gah said; if SL made 250 Oz would need to knock 'em off in 29 overs.
Yea a respectable total makes it all but impossible for the convicts. They'd have to know them even quicker if it was 150, but it's plausible knocking 150 off in ~25 overs. At 200 it's more like 27 overs. I might be a few balls off one way or the other but I can't be bothered going through the calculations again - it's broadly correct.

If Oz bat first they need to win by ~126 runs.

Weird game, neither side played all that well and some rather shocking stuff on show at times. NZ can feel hard done by for no ball that never was (i'd have called it) and Ronchi has to be the worst pinch hitter in history.

Anyway, bring on the semis.

So smug. Chasing this down was always gonna be hard labour, if it was only around par. Was sure people who said it'd be easy didn't watch the same game.

How is NRR calculated if, say, SL get 250 off 50 overs, and then rain comes and Australia get given a revised target off 25? Or even more complicated, if SL were to get say 200-2 off 40, rain comes and then Australia got a revised target of 240 off 40. Or some other D-L calculation?

The Ronchi experiment hasn't worked at all. It would have been nice to have those two overs he wasted back.

An even bigger problem for me is Franklin. Once again he has done nothing with bat or ball. How long can we afford to carry passengers like Ronchi and Franklin?

Congrats to England, but it's been a poor performance by both teams, tbh.

I thought we batted well for about two thirds of our innings and generally bowled well bar the odd over here and there. It was a flawed performance which meant NZ were always in the game but I think we were worthy winners and if we tidy a few things up I can see us beating Saffa.

Just relieved really. I personally thought the no ball was touch and go, depends when you consider his foot to have landed. Probably wasn't enough to overturn the decision etc.

What about T20 v D/L, BeeGee?

Someone came up with an interesting suggestion on cricinfo the other day - just a fan who sent in a comment. He essentially proposed that in situations like this, they shouldn't actually reduce the overs like that to create a T20-like contest. Instead, the team batting first would be told to bat out its 24 overs (in this game's example) as if they had the full 50 rather than 24, and then have that score (lets say it's something like 110/2) converted by D/L as if they really had gone out there at the start and then been cut off by rain after 24. The team batting second would then bat out its 24 as if it had 50 overs to chase that converted score. D/L would then, after their 24 overs, decide if they'd chased the score down or not. So they'd have to preserve wickets, just as in a real 50 over chase.

It's something you'd have to have a deep love of D/L to consider, and not many cricket fans even understand it let alone love it, but I found it an interesting take all the same. The commenter was working off your rationale in a way; he said that the format was 50 overs and that it makes no sense to actually change that within the tournament.
Love it. Absolutely love it.

3 wides, two full tosses in the last over, England really need a death bowler.
You thinking what I'm thinking?

The only downside is that it's very concentrated to one part of the innings, and doesn't factor in that certain sides may be better at batting or bowling in the death, or it may be a weakness for them. I'd think that it would help England more than NZ if it was done today, since England are a bit rubbish at bowling at the death and have arguably their best batsman up the order.
