Bopara's selection is pretty reasonable on the grounds of his bowling surely?

Not really, since if he plays, he'll probably be the 6th bowler. And no, I really don't want him at 6 or 7 and being the 5th bowler. For the reasons I mentioned in the OP.

Look, I really loved Bopara's work in the ODI's against the crims last year, he was the best player in the series, and I even thought it was harsh when he got dropped. But he's done nothing to earn his recall. Literally nothing. If he's really going to bat 4 for us, in a lineup which has Bresnan at 7, because of his medium pace bowling, and only four men outside the ring maximum now remember, then we're ****ed.

Looking at the pictures of the way Broad took that catch in training it makes you think they made more of these injuries just to give them a break ahead of the busy summer. If a guy has a knee problem you aren't going to make him take catches like that unless it isn't that serious.

Tbf, Cook said it wasn't just a precaution, and even if it was a final, it would be touch and go. Although, I guess he would say that even if they probably could have played.

Anyway, England need both of them to be fit if they are to do well in the CT, so hopefully it isn't anything too serious.

Tredwell's kind of put a spanner in the works today. He probably deserves to be in the side on Saturday due to his performances over the last year and a bit, but can we afford to go in with two similar off spinners in a world of two new balls? And if he came in then Bresnan would probably be the seamer to miss out, which would leave Broad at 7 and Swann at 8! Both probably two places too high. If he were to come in for Bresnan than Ravi would probably have to play as the 5th bowler, which would mean that we'd essentially have three middle overs specialists and only two front line seamers.

Therefore, it's probably impossible for Tredwell to come into the side, which is a tad harsh given his efforts for England lately, but I just think it would screw with the balance too much were he to play.

Yeah, I'd probably still go with my side in the OP. Just think it's a tad harsh on Tredders given most of our best one day cricket recently has come with him near the forefront. Suppose he could perhaps play instead of Broad if it's a really slow pitch offering turn.

If ever there's a time to play two off-spinners it is against Australia. I don't think England have enough control when they pick their 4 seamers. If a team gets going then there is Swann to slow the pace, make the batsmen work for runs - he can't bowl at both ends.
