***Official*** New Zealand in England series 2013

King Pietersen

International Captain
We don't need major changes, not the ludicrous changes Botham's been talking about, but Trego should definitely be in ahead of Woakes, and then Finn, Broad and Pietersen come in for Dernbach, Bresnan and Bell. Looks a much stronger side to me, but obviously, KP's not ready for selection yet.

Cook
Bell
Trott
Pietersen
Morgan
Buttler
SOMEONE
Swann
Broad
Anderson
Finn

Root, Taylor, Ballance the back up batting options. No real specialist opening options (Carberry/Cobb/Stoneman perhaps) but if Bell got dropped then Trott or KP could move up.
#7 spot would be one of Bresnan/Woakes/Stokes/Trego/Patel/Luke Wright/Bopara/some other allrounder
Tredders would be Swann's deputy
Could do worse than go back to Ajmal Shahzad as a back up bowling option, Chris Wood has had a great start to his career as have Chris Jordan and Chirs Rushworth this season. Otherwise it's someone like Onions. There are literally no seam bowlers in the country begging to be selected in OD cricket.

All this talk of changes is ridiculous. I mean we know what England's side will look like when the Champions Trophy starts, Broad and Finn in for Dernbach and Woakes makes a huge difference.
The only question mark is around the #7 spot IMO. The issue is outside of the starting XI, that's where the changes need to occur. The England management seem to have the pecking order of replacements completely wrong.

Yeah, I think what the last couple of ODI series for England has shown is that they either have absolutely no bowling depth or the selectors have got the reserve bowling picks completely wrong.

Or, more likely, a bit of both.

One day I'll bother to do the list of elligible England players I'd rather have in then Dirtbag. It has been a question asked by some posters here, who you'd rather have in. Quite frankly it would take me too long. All-rounders, spinners, veterans, as well as like-for-like would all come into it. I guess it would have to be county-by-county, so you didn't miss anyone.

Yeah agree and this is what these two games have shown. I don't think Bresnan is ideal but he is not awful and would go with him for the upcoming games.

Would really like to see Carberry get a go at the top but I don't think it is going to happen.

I hate to be a Burgey parrot but Hales would probably be the next opener in line I reckon.

EDIT: Well, aside from the fact that the current top four + Pietersen are all basically OD openers anyway.

I don't mind Woakes but he is totally out of form. Drop him and bring him back when he has some and has earnt it. Dernbach well we all know about him and nobody would pick him, if you do pick him then god help you. Trouble is next in line seems to be Rankin and he is no better and even Knight questioned that one as he has hardly played.

Completely forgot him. Cobb's scored as many centuries this season as Hales has in his career though. His List A record isn't all that flash. Did horribly on the Lions tour of Aus too.

What about Root as an opener?
Yeah, see my edit. I don't think the fact that Hales is an opener will help him as such; they'll only play him if they think he's the next best bat overall because Root, Trott or Pietersen could easily open anyway. But I do think they if they did want another specialist opener, he'd be it.

Guptill really living up to my new avatar, he's certainly taken to the not inconsiderate task.

Yeah I know, but while it's not great it's not exactly poor like Bairstow's, and the fact that he's shown he has an awesome T20I record for England so far, and the fact that he's just something a bit different in general compared to England's other ODI top order would both definitely count in his favour IMO.

Haven't seen a ball of the series but my ideal side for the CT hasn't changed. As Pothas said, Broad and Finn in makes a huge difference.

I dont really think you're lacking for openers. I mean, isn't that's supposed to be KP's spot nowadays? (a move i quite like)
