***Official*** New Zealand in England series 2013

If Bell had faced 50-60 balls and was still batting like this he'd have copped it too. Trott is in now. Raise the run rate ffs.
Batting like what? What's the par? If I was an England fan I'd like them to be a bit further along (the wickets obv the main problem though) but purely in terms of run rate they are not that far off and neither is Trott. Would 71(73) be ok? It's only another 10 runs....

If they were 190-200 for 2 right now I'd think they were putting up a decent effort.

Just don't think in this particular case he's going anywhere near as bad as has been made out...but that seems to be a trend with Trott

They have to score ~180 runs in 18 overs. They are miles off. They should be 200+ by now.

10 an over off 18 is not that ridiculous in the context of needing 7.2 over the whole innings.

Something like 160 off 18 would've been an ok result with wickets in hand imo.

We're talking 20 or so runs maybe, and Trott ideally might've had another 10- but the real problem is the other batsmen (who never really put their foot down either) got out.

You never watched a pro40 match on Sky? It is really not hard to tell why Buttler has been selected.
Not hard to look good on the Taunton road. Better bowling and he looks all at sea. Add in his sloppy glovework and the hype about him is undeserved.

Nah you're talking out of your arse here. Even in modern day ODIs, 10+ RPO over a sustained period is very rare and usually needs a gun chaser (Kohli, Dhoni, Watson etc) to do it.

Yeah but it's not even remotely the same thing. If Trott was playing this innings setting a target it'd be fine, and if Kane was playing his innings while chasing 360 it'd be poor.

I'm sure England's plan isn't to replicate New Zealand's innings. It'd be ****ing stupid if so. It's a lot easier to maintain a higher rate for the first 40 than it is to score 130 off the last 10. It only worked out that way for New Zealand because England bowled absolute pies in that period; you can't plan your innings around that.
Not really sure that's as definite as you make it out to be with England's batting lineup being so 'finisher-heavy'. Like, it's still true but if there's going to be a batting lineup which wins more games by doing the hard yards later rather than sooner, it's this one.

The other thing which hurts Trott, he's an anchor whereby there are other members of the team who aren't exactly the type of players who need an anchor. Many of them are not consistently quick scorers as well. That's why he cops it compared to other individuals from other teams.
Pick on the others then. Trott always cops it.

Fair enough his innings today hasn't been great but it's better than Bell's and Cook threw away a start. It's not like anyone at the other end has gone great guns.

360 is also very rare! Needing to score 9 or 10 an over is the result of the RR being 7.2 in the first place...you have to do something unusual to chase down 360. One way to go about it (or any chase) is to score a bit (but not grossly) below the rate, retain wickets and hope you can accelerate at the end. England got a bit behind but not horrendously.

Name me a case where that's been successful in a big (300+) chase. The vast proportion of these successful chases are approached by going big at the start.

Michael Clarke used to be criticised for this in 2009-2010 for the record TH, so its not just Trott.

Bell and especially Cook have copped plenty of criticism in the past for their ODI batting. Wasn't Cook told he scores too slowly to be ODI captain?
