I don't quite understand the Rankin call-up.

I understand that there aren't many bowlers taking wickets at a decent economy rate in the YB40 at the moment, but if you're going to call someone new up to the squad, why not make it a youngster and give them some exposure? I mean, it isn't like these 3 ODIs are all that meaningful.

That then begs the question of who to blood, which is easier asked than solved tbf. Harris, Roland-Jones or Overton, perhaps? Or Jordan is the other option, I guess.

On the Guptill on 99 with 1 run to win situation, is there any batsmen in the world that you, as the bowler, would have purposely bowled a leg-side wide to just to be a ****?

I'm thinking Watto and Kohli as a start.

Franklin is in the team solely because he's our only decent player of spin barring Taylor.

TBH I think it's a good ploy.

Yes, I am not disputing that his role as a bowler will often do more harm than good to the team's chances. Needs to bowl those change-up slower balls a lot more in order to be somewhat less hittable.

So, basically, we have:

Guptill
another opener/wicketkeeper
Williamson
Taylor
Elliott/another middle order player, preferably one who can bowl a few non-pies
McCullum, who can also be the keeper
A big-hitting finisher, who can also bowl at least five overs of non-pies
NcCullum/Vettori
Southee
Mills
Mitch

I expect/hope Ryder to come in for either Ronchi or Elliott later this year. Which one he replaces may be totally up to whether McCullum can still keep.

I was thinking that, as good as Vettori is as a bowler, we would lose out a little in the death batting and lose a lot in the fielding if he played ahead of NcCullum. Having both Vettori and Mills in the same limited overs team is very risky.
I would like to have Dan be the number 7 guy. I reckon when he gets his eye in he can be effective in batting powerplays like the CT game against Pakistan some years ago.

My only disadvantage of having dan is if the rumours are true that he used to be part of the gang of senior players who would just go to the bar and not practice.

What are your examples of his spin play (unintentional pun)
Averages 33 in ODIs with the bat against Sri Lanka and has scored close to 200 runs against India in three games without being dismissed.

393 @ 39.3 in Asia as well.

Don't agree with resting Southee. Just releasing some of the pressure when there was no need to.

And replacing him with Dougeh 8-0-55-0 Bracewell?

We are also extremely **** at setting targets and we are also trusting Dougeh to defend the target in the death overs with his test length, or getting Mills to go for 45 off his final 4 overs at the death.

It will be a minor miracle if we end up winning this game.

Yeah, I don't like it either. Put everything into this game and if we win then give him a rest. We can't allow England to get momentum back in the series. We could push ourselves past the West Indies on the rankings with a good effort in this game.

Hopefully Ronchi scores a few today.

Is England's policy now picking overseas born players? I fail to see what Dernbach and Rankin bring to the party.. Perhaps there is a big dearth of seam bowling talent.. Isn't Finn good for a one dayer or two?

that was a dire way to try and defend that

early call but im fast getting the impression ronchi is best used down the order in england odis.

Finn is injured/rested at the moment. Broad too.

Ronchi you donkey ! Smith is right about the obvious flaw with his batting technique.

Ronchi is really vulnerable early in his innings regardless of where he bats. Gets a lot of scores 0-5.

OK the Rochi experment has failed, bar Elliot scoring 50+ we need to drop him and bring in Rutherford and drop Rochi down the order.

Well nobody on this board would pick either Dernbach or Rankin, there isn't a dearth of talent just our selectors have had a brainfart.

he averages less than 20 domestically in one dayers. cut off cover and point and he's cramped.
