He didn't pre-meditate it either way; he tried to play it from the bowler's hand. The two card trick is effective like that because it messes with the footwork and general technique of the batsman; not because they put their bat in the wrong spot in expectation of the ball swinging the other way.That's what I mean though.
If he was setting himself up to protect his stumps from the inswinger he wouldn't have had time to react to the outswinger.
I dunno, it's just a theory.
I've never actually faced a bowler who could legitimately swing it both ways.
