If he was setting himself up to protect his stumps from the inswinger he wouldn't have had time to react to the outswinger.

I dunno, it's just a theory.

I've never actually faced a bowler who could legitimately swing it both ways.
He didn't pre-meditate it either way; he tried to play it from the bowler's hand. The two card trick is effective like that because it messes with the footwork and general technique of the batsman; not because they put their bat in the wrong spot in expectation of the ball swinging the other way.

Doug looking a different bowler against Trott. He seems to have some issues getting shape into lefties, though for all I know it's a plan. We've seen him manage it before.

Yes,....

My impression is that Wagner should only ever bowl in the last ten minutes before lunch and tea breaks - seems to lure Trott in particular into indiscretions in those periods...

England have been really quite swish-happy outside off since Southee came off tbh, it's been odd batting at times
