I think it's just poor batting. KW is falling away from the ball when he plays the shot, if he stays still the ball usually deflects off the thigh pad to fine leg after he nicks it. Cook's trademark flaw.

Southee having a go is infinitely better than Southee trying to bat properly as things stand. He isn't a very batsman-like lower order player atm. Might change in time and often tries to bat properly but he's far more effective and comfortable when he's given a license.
