Clearly there is a slight problem when you have Cowan and Rogers in the same team, but I think having Warner, Watson and Hughes in the same team is equally troubling. At whatever cost, I want to see Rogers and Khawaja in the team, and I don't particularly care who gets left out.

Warner at 6 wouldn't be a bad move if we can admit to ourselves this series won't be won and lost on Twatto's bowling. He slid down the order in IPL (yes, yes, I know) and has allegedly found his niche.

In any case, do you want him hitting through the line at a new ball or an old one?

That way we can have ourselves:

Cowan
Rogers
Hughes
Khawaja
Clarke (let the bloke bat at 5, he's earned it)
Warner
Haddin

If you insist on playing Watson, Hughes would be first on the block. FFS Neil D'Costa, "cherry ripe" my anus.

Reckon that could work but it'd be Watson in for Khawaja and perhaps a reshuffle in the top 4.

Exactly how many test quality batsmen have been able to play anywhere in the top 6 in the history of the game? I can't think of any in my 25 years watching. Sachin and Lara could have opened but their teams knew better than exposing them to the 1 st over. Sure openers can go down and do a job but your not being fair to a specialist by doing that.

Opening you have the whole team to come to build with. Especially if your not a big hitter. At 6 you will be batting with Clarke, Haddin and the bowlers. It takes a different mind set to score with the lower order. Hussey had that but you can't expect an opener to be the new Hussey.

Pick the best 2 openers. Then worry about 3-6. If Rogers is in the team he has to open. I don't know that he will be better than Cowan but they are both competing for 1 spot if I was selecting.

nah look there's a few things there (pissed or not) i disagree with

it would be unreasonable to ask a free flowing shotmaker of a middle order batsman (m.waugh, d.martyn, abcdev, pietersen etc) to open. it would be no problem, in fact a benefit especially taking into account that there is no pressure for them to get a move on nowadays for an opener to come in down the order and play circumspect against an older ball, or play an openers role against a new ball, second time around for the bowlers. on a turner, it's only a few overs different to opening anyway and it doesnt really count as turners aint cricket innit
It's true that it's not totally unreasonable for an opener to bat in the middle order, but it still means you're not utilizing the best of his skills. A middle order player needs the ability to bat at multiple tempos, to milk the spinners, and to bat with the tail. Stodgy old fashioned openers like Rodgers have concentration, patience, and judgement but often won't have as wide of an attacking game or as much time batting with the tail.

Heard a good i/v with Rogers the other day on the radio. I understand there's been issues with him personality-wise within the group before, but he actually sounded very reasonable.

Then again, that might be why there have been issues with him...

How does he go in the field, out of interest?

Think fielding is an issue; took a blinder in his one Test match, but we played against him on one occasion, and a few guys who had played against him a fair bit before were remarking about how well he fielded in that ; you don't really hear that too often about FC players.

not the most athletic in the field, but better than usman anyway

i can remember having discussions when he played in 09 or whenever it was about how he manages to pick up the ball being colourblind and all

He's a slipper. Quite a good one too IMO; should field in the slips if he plays.

Averages just under 1 catch per match at fc level. It ain't Bob Simpson, but it's not too bad. Obvs doesn't say how many he's shelled, but after Clarke he'd probably be our best slip option.

Unless he is excellent, he will probably get the new kid role of square leg/close in fielder. I would love to see him replace Hughes at third slip though, or he could go to gully where Hussey has left a spot...

I think Cowan will stay under the lid. I also wonder if Watson might not be the guy to go to gully? Hughes maybe, but can't think of too many other candidates really.

I'd go Clarke, Rogers, Hughes in slips with Watto at Gully.

Where did you hear this i/v, out of interest? Tbf he seemed to rub Hayden the wrong way in particular and, well...

Cannot see the Aussies winning a test match this year, England simply have too much for them even though we are in poor form ourselves

Its like the reverse of the old bad days, England to win 3-0

Nah, Oz will throw in a WACAesque thrashing at some stage if our bowlers are fit

If our guys click once and blast you out cheaply twice we only need Clarkeh to score and have a couple of partnerships. That we are capable of. I personally would worry that our guys would struggle more on a bowlers pitch. The logic that we could win a low scoring match is sound though.

We ain't playing in India. Australia will be right in this.

If Cook/Trott/KP/Bell/Prior score big we'll lose, but <350 scores will be beatable and we should have the attack to roll England for sub 350 more than a few times.
