Yeah the plan was for Kieswetter to keep in four-day cricket and Buttler in 40 and 20 overs games but he'll get his chance sooner than planned.

There was an interview with Mike Newell (notts coach) at lunch on radio 5 sports extra - always interesting as he speaks his mind.

Cliff notes are that him and Flower have been getting at Broad to bat properly and concentrate on it more otherwise he's going to batting at 10 rather than 7 but Broad still continues to bat like a maverick. Patel works on the wrong stuff and doesn't know his own game- says he needs to score hundreds rather than 40's and 50's. And some other honest admissions that I can no longer remember.

Two sixes in a 49 ball 46 certainly don't suggest Broad has taken it on board.

No doubt he would have liked to make a few more, but he played a valuable innings today, and I'm sure he wasn't told they wanted him to score slowly. 'Proper' batsmen hit 6s as well, after all.

Yeah, I obviously didn't see the innings, so don't know whether the scoring rate was justified by the bowling. But Broad tends to score at that rate no matter what the bowling usually

yes he should play aggresively but especially at the start he needs to pay some care and attention.... and then not get carried away when he's playing well. You can't just go out and smack it every time. Yes he's got two fourties. He was dropped three times against derbybshire and was out caught on the boundary trying to hit another six. He was dropped once today although from listening to the commentary it did sound a more controlled innings compared to the derby game.

I think what disappoints a lot of people is he has so much talent batting wise yet he doesn't seem that bothered about trying too hard. People think he could be so much more as a batsman - maybe they're wrong. Whatever.

I've always been amazed by what Broad has said about his batting in interviews. Whenever asked about being a genuine all-round a year or two ago, he'd say that he wasn't one, and would talk about how someone averaging 30 couldn't bat 6 these days like Flintoff did. He seems content with being the number 9 he was when England got to number one in the world, when he could just come in and slog everything the Indian's bowled at him, as he didn't hold any responsibility, and we usually had 500 by that stage already. That's what disappoints me. This is a guy who came in and was scoring regular 50's against the likes of South Africa when he'd just turned 22, and amassed a daddy hundred against a world class bowling attack after his top order had been blown away. Yet he just doesn't seem to care.

I don't think it's just him, FTR. A lot of guys come into the side and show good all-round ability, but they start focusing more on their specialist role, and their secondary skill tails off. Conversely, guys who are complete mugs with the bat work their socks off with the willow and become guys who can hold a decent bat (think Finn, Anderson, Panesar).

People often talk about how Ashwin could bat in the middle order for India, but I wouldn't be at all surprised if he's stopped getting 50's entirely in a couple of years. Thankfully there's already enough talk about Woakes playing as a genuine all-rounder for that not to happen with him. Especially as he could get his first chance in the test side batting at 7.

Really surprised we left Wood out for Thorp in the the previous matches given he wasn't really ever going to bowl more than the odd containing over. Wood is highly thought of and has done well in his short career. Hopefully he'll get a good run in the side now.

People seem to think the opposite will happen with Woakes if anything - that his bowling will give way.

Gutted for CK. Yeah, it'll be nice for Jos to get some time behind the stumps but 6 weeks is a long old time with the County schedule the way it is and obviously rules him out of the CT (you'd imagine anyway) where he might've been the backup keeper.

Who are people actually expecting to see at 6 against NZ then? I guess Bairstow would be 'next cab off the rank' from our last Test but he's not actually scored any runs and Jimmy Taylor has. If he gets some again in the Lions game it'll be pretty hard to ignore him.

Happy TRJ has been picked for the Lions. Onions has a real shot to stake a claim too. Also nice to see that Woakes will be at 7 in the game, at the lowest.

I'd bat Prior at 6 and play Woakes, but I accept I'm probably in the minority there. Reckon Bairstow will keep his place and play both games.

To think that he didn't play one single first-class game last year, while Paul Borrington and Matt Lineker were getting what looked like an endless string of chances!

On the other side, Palladino's bowling has been absolutely terrible so far. Not that the others are wrecking havoc either, but he's really struggling this year.
