If you're including Ilott, then Phil Newport is worth a mention. 800-odd first class wickets at 26, and he was a genuine number 8 in a period when England's tail was often pretty feeble. (Bicknell also became a very reliable late order batsman, as did Glen Chapple...)

Haha, did Richard actually keep any stats or was it just a theory?
I don't know - by the time I joined it was just a subject of ridicule - personally I also thought it was an interesting if flawed idea, but being Richard he must have had some stats to start with, mustn't he? PEWS to find the first ever post about

I love theories that are silly but you can see some warped logic. I imagine with cricinfo ball by ball we could construct some stats

Some good shouts on England players in particular - we specialised at messing people around in this regard...

Always thought Rob Bailey deserved another chance - screwed by an umprire in the West Indies.

Steve Watkin was quality on his few performances for England, and certainly did nothing wrong.

Stuart MacGill. Was unquestionably the third best bowler in Australia for a decade but only got a go at the SCG or raging bunsens overseas, because of the three seamers orthodoxy.

Not that it mattered because the side was dominant anyway, but I think the 2005 Ashes might have been even more interesting if he was on the park.

I think the First Chance Average came about because it's originator believed that Marcus Trescothick was the luckiest man alive as he was dropped early on during some of his early centuries and it gave him an undeserved average which needed reducing.
He also devised the Premature Lumbago Average and managed to get Mike Atherton's average up to 60.

Tbf the baseball cousins treat misfields as if the batsman was actually out when compiling stats for their pitchers and batsmen.

The newer members really missed something in Richard, didn't we? How many times did he get banned, btw? :)

Only a couple of short ones as far as I recall - I don't think he'd have got them now - would never have had enough infractions, unless getting up Brumby's nose was against the rules - in which case he'd have been perma'd years ago

Haha, he also rated A. Donald very highly and would use all sorts of arguments to raise his stocks:D

Didn't know that. So by misfields you mean catches? Or misfields when he would have been 'run out' ? (not sure the Baseball terminology)

I never though he abused people as such but he was like do with a bone. He posted once that if someone gave up a debate then he considered he had won the argument:@, he never gave up!
