***Official*** England in New Zealand series 2013

Dunedin came onto the itinerary with the ambitions to host some pretty aggressive cricket, and it probably just missed a few fundamentals along the way...certainly can't fault the English for being overly keen, but today it wasn't good enough and Dunedin exposed them.

Batting first and with the game reduced to 4 days really limits England's chances here. Even if they make 500 batting first they won't particularly want to enforce the followon (unless they bowl nz in less than 50 overs) but will probably have to if they want to win.

England's best chance is they get bowled out for 275 or 300 on the first day. Of course that opens the game up for NZ and if they get a big first innings score they could put some pressure on england in the second innings.

Wonder if England considered the four seamer route once Swann went home. Bottom 4 looks pretty ropey. Broad these days is more a number 9 than 8. Finn is improving a little but Anderson and Panesar's batting are in reverse. It shouldn't matter given the strength of the top 7 but it still worries me. Woakes may have been close to playing but always a dangerous ploy going in without a frontline spinner. Root is a decent occasional bowler but is just that at the moment. Unlike to bowl much at Yorkshire with Rafiq there also.

Hope he is pushed to continue to develop his offspin with england. Could be a real asset in t20/odi cricket as a 6th bowler and as a partner to Kerrigan or Panesar in the test team spinning the ball in opposite direction.

So it counts as a well earned draw for NZ right?
Well, England will lose ranking points if they fail to win every test, so it certainly counts as a poor England performance

But yeah, this gives NZ a good chance IMO. England will have to score reasonably quickly if they are to win the game, which could open the game up to NZ.

Bet it'll be bright, sunny and perfect for batting when the match gets underway tomorrow.
Yeah that's a real cricketing issue tbh. They should be allowed to the toss again or change their decisions IMO.

If we are going to keep limiting international cricket to December and Autumn, I wonder if New Zealand has given any thought to bringing back the concept of the reserve day? Not necessarily as a gap hanging in the middle of a match like it used to, but as a day tacked on to the end of each test match and only used if needed.

It really messes with the lower order, seeing as Broad has never made runs away from home. Damages the fielding a lot too. But he hasn't been bowling all that well lately and Panesar is certainly capable.
