If his strength is in pace bowling, why wasn't he picked to face the best pace bowling attack going around?
Because his technique against pace was still being repaired.

The Sri Lanka series and the one-dayers confirmed he had significantly improved against pace AFAIC.

Yeah but you just said he was the best batsman in Australia by some distance!

Heard of Michael Clarke?
I think it was pretty obvious that we were talking about pool of batsmen who haven't yet established themselves in the team and what I meant was that Hughes is the best we have got among that lot.

Sorry, the SL series with the great pace bowlers that they possess? How does that confirm anything?

Had he done something like that against Steyn and co it'd be a different matter.

We shouldn't/couldn't drop Hughes now as he has done all there is to do at the domestic level, he is the best batsman in Australia by some distance and whatever technical problems are there should be worked on within the national set-up, as for Cowan, for the next test Khawaja should come into the side in his place.
Are you being serious with that statement?

But hey, it's foolish to actually have an opinion that is based upon looking at a player and judging with your eyes as to what he has improved. Much better to just read a scorecard.

So watching this Aussie batting line up is like watching England against Pakistan in UAE. FFS don't sweep if you aren't very good at the shot. England learnt after that series and the defeat in the first in SL. Will the Aussies learn quicker and play properly in the rest of this match and the last 2 tests?

Hughes is making Bell look a good player of spin at present but probably has to stay in the side if Watson is going home. Wonder if he will be one who gets dropped after this series though? Even if he is picked he will be under intense pressure in the opening ashes encounter to come good.

Anyway back to this game, Australia had a decent day all round just a bit of a dodgy end to it but at the start of play they'd have probably said this was a position they'd take. Need to bat at least 4 more sessions and hope India choke in the run chase. Tall order but Clarke could do it, needs a partner though.

Simple because our selectors are a bunch of dumb ****s....

The thing is Hughes is a solid character, for a guy his age he has maturity beyond his years, you would never see him celebrating in an over the top fashion after reaching a landmark or showing any theatrics after getting out cheaply. He has the passion and integrity to say no to a BBL deal and then spend his own money to go to India, to develop his on-side game which was pretty much non-existent previously, these are the little things that tell you a lot about a young player's temperament, all you can ask from your young player is to show the urge to improve and get better and someone like Hughes has certainly done that.
