Well that's the thing. I'm getting tired of these 'tricky' selections. I'd much prefer at this stage we just pick the best team overall and stick with it the majority of the time. I feel like a horses for courses type of selection would work way better if you already have a settled, core team, with one or two 'specialist' players rotated in. We've had too many new players come in and out of the team in recent times, and need some team unity asap.

Yeah I'm not disagreeing with that. I just disagree that Siddle and Bird will be busting a nut over the idea of bowling in England. Both would prefer to bowl in South Africa or even Australia IMO. I don't think the conditions will neutralise them or be terrible for their bowling or anything but I don't think they're ideally suited as some people keep saying about them. The blokes who will get more assistance than they do in Australia are the swing bowlers - Starc, Pattinson, Hilfenhaus, Butterworth etc. That doesn't mean we should pick an attack just full of swing bowlers if they aren't our best bowlers, but I'm just not getting the supposed extra suitability angle for the bowlers in question.

But who actually are you disagreeing with? Can't me as I just said Siddle should do well, didn't say conditions are perfect for him or anything.

Have heard/seen lots of people say Bird and/or Siddle are ideally suited to England. They're not. The conditions don't suit them particularly.

yeah fair points. From a fan pov as well, I don't like players coming in and out of the side constantly either. I want a team to back, not an extended squad.
Anyway for me, the core attack has to be Pattinson, Siddle, Bird and Lyon as it stands. I don't think there would be much point in discarding Lyon at this stage, and I think he'll get back closer to where he was a few months ago in due course. Siddle hasn't been very good in recent times, but I'd be very confident he can still do his job adequately enough. The problem is when he is paired with another bowler who can't hold their own very well, and Pattinson is left to fend for himself. Bird, though, has done nothing wrong so far and deserves to be a main member of the attack, and, really, is exactly the kind of bowler Pattinson needs to have opposite him. Also think Ryan Harris should be very much still be in contention as a rotation bowler.
The batting is more difficult, but I think Cowan, Hughes, and Watson could be on notice soon (in that order). Maybe we should be really thinking about bringing Haddin back and using Wade as a batsman as well. I also agree with those annoyed with the all-rounder thing. We need to make our batting as strong as possible, not weaken it by reducing the number of specialists.

Really? I haven't read anyone on here say that about Siddle.

The normal awards that everyone else has
Someone with cred (Lillee maybe, or even Spofforth) needs to get in Siddle's ear and set him right.

If any Aussie paceman is suited to England it is Hilfenhaus. Not sure he'll be in the squad though.

That's interesting. Having missed the Aus-SL series and hearing so much about how good Bird would be in England I've just been assuming he is an Alderman-esque swing bowler.
Pretty clear when you look at the list of fast bowlers who've really succeeded in England post Warne-McGrath what they all have in common - Hilfenhaus, Amir, Asif, Zaheer, Praveen, Philander, O'Brien.
