Yeah agreed. He's a very good bowler but realistically his average will rise over time, he just doesn't have that extra gear required to get really good players in all conditions.

That said, it's one thing getting favourable wickets, it's another to perform on them so he is no mug.

All aside, he's a guy who has an opinion on a lot of things and rightly or wrongly I've heard that hasn't helped his cause. Can occasionally happen with country boys.

The Lyon situation kind of reminds of the Giles situation with England. Obviously Lyon is a better bowler, Giles a better bat etc.

There's a real lack of obvious spin options and the team already has 3 decent seamers plus other reasonable pace options. From a statistical point of view Lyon is an okay option, but really he has simply cleaned up a lot of tailenders and typically ordinary finger spinners tend to get quite good figures in their first 50 or so wickets then things go downhill. He doesn't really have a role in the Australian side. Australia need a spinner who can bowl in friendly conditions or force victories, Lyon is ****e when the onus is on him. Which means he's not really worth much to the team.

Shrewd move by Lyon to wear out the Indian batsmen by letting them try to hit so many 6's. Expect the Indians to collapse like a pack of cards due to exhaustion and stiff lats today.

Decent spinner in getting smashed by India shocker.

Some people seem to be forgetting Swann/Panesar were the exception, and that is why their performance is so lauded. Most of the time it's one way traffic when you put a spinner in front of India.

Jeets (WAG) did better on a much better pitch itbt. Lyon bowled a lot of filth for a specialist spinner.

He seems to start most of his spells pretty well then fades out. Partly it's because the poor **** knows there's no chance of a catch behind or a stumping, but he needs to work on his endurance I think.

Scaly you are right about that. India are probably most vulnerable since 1999/2000.

But that doesn't mean Australia should drop Lyon or his place should be at risk, even if he couldn't make significant inroads against a vulnerable Indian batting lineup. Why? Because he out bowled Siddle and Starc. It doesn't matter that the pitches didn't suit them, they aren't for the next 3 tests either.

Lyon bowling reasonably poorly still looked more threatening than Starc and Siddle. Hence if a bowler i to be dropped for the next test, whether it be for a spinner or pace bowler, it should be Starc or Siddle.

I'd drop Starc for Johnson.
Surprised Johnson wasn't really in the scheme of things for Chennai considering he actually has test experience in India.

Not sure India will be Starc's cup of tea - the lack of bounce negates his major strength.
Johnson is skiddier and quicker and I think will be more of a threat.

Not a bad point. Johnson's bowling is definitely more suited to India.

I think you had to give Starc a go in India before Johnson, but it would not be unreasonable to, having seen this test, bring in Johnson.

It would also not be unreasonable to think that Johnson, regardless of the fact his bowling is more suitable to India, is a pea-hearted *****, and keep Starc in the team.

but he's 175cm. and ain't got massive arms. so it's basically the same result. he's a lesser chance of getting it above the eyes than doherty (178cm). lyon (181cm), beer (187cm) and your boi turner (191cm). sok needs to get his hands onto dustin fletcher's arms

Last time I saw SOK bowl (BB this year, I think) he looked as though he had improved his action quite a lot and definitely wasnt as round arm as when he played for Australia A

Also "getting it above the eyes " refers to the ball going up from the hand to a point above the batsman's eye level and then dropping as it approaches

Being shorter actually helps him to achieve this

Anyway, virtually no chance of him going so its irrelevant
