McCullum hails it as a phenomenal achievement and one of NZ's best victories ever.
Looks like he wants to return home as captain with some glory.
Still, was a shocking loss from us. We should have won that even without the above players - ability wise we are easily superior imo. Typical choke.
Lets just stick to tests then...?

So what, we where missing Ryder, Taylor and Southee and everyone knows how much greater South Africa's domestic batting depth is than New Zealand's. There is a reason we play a team of fielders

Yeah, point still stands. It's a match between two weakened teams - hardly the sort of match you'd classify as one of the greatest ever.

Think the player SA miss a lot in this format is Duminy because he knows how to pace an innings.Undoubtedly both teams were a bit depleted, perhaps SA more so it does make McCullum's comments about the phenomenal win, one of the greatest ever a bit disingenuous. His comments were made on the basis that NZ was ranked 9th and SA 1st. Obviously SA aren't ranked the top but he omits to mention that the batsmen who basically earned SA that rating were all missing. In reality SA blows hot and cold in this format and it's not a major surprise they lost a couple of matches, though were highly competitive in both. Furthermore NZ has always been more competitive in limited overs matches when their test team is struggling just as Sri Lanka on the basis of their test performances might have expected a thrashing but have more than held their own and could possibly win the series.

And from his own point of view, having been in the Black Caps for however long. Just because they're both weakened sides doesn't mean it can't rate as a great match for one individual involved. Context.

Perhaps - I would think a world cup quarterfinal win would be more important to us in our memories than this victory. However take it for what it is - his young charges were humiliated in the tests and he is trying to build some confidence with his comments.
His comments are probably the tonic that is needed.

All true, but I think we can forgive him being pretty excited about it. Given the controversy surrounding the captaincy change (in which he's come in for major criticism), leading to Taylor pulling out of the tour, the test thrashings, the awkward situation of Bond's letter criticising Hesson being leaked, I think many expected NZ to become a rabble who would get smashed regardless of who SA put out. To then get its first series win in SA ever, after all that's been going on, is a major upset. And as McCullum notes there were some exceptional things about the performance, with Williamson's batting and the fielding being terrific.

Nah it's unfortunate you interpreted it that way. All he said was 'the top team', he didn't specify one form, two forms, three forms.
