well i think they decided Maxwell, Dussey and Doherty couldn't make up 20 overs (fair enough), so wanted another option. pretty simple. hasn't worked out 'cause of the batting (and i don't think usman over maxwell/smith would have changed much there)

That may have been the case - but the three you mention are already slow/spin bowlers. Given the conditions they needed either an extra proper batsman, another seamer or a batsman who can bowl part time seamers.
