He was perceived (correctly) to be pretty one-dimensional with his scoring options, making him easy to tie down. I still agree he probably should've got a look in sooner though, given his list-a record is superior to all the alternatives.

On another note I don't think Usman should be playing ODIs unless he opens, he's just too boundary reliant and uncomfortable starting against spin. If his inability to rotate the strike creates issues in FC cricket then how do they think he's going to cope with the middle overs of an ODI. At number 3 there will still be times like today, where he has to start after the field restrictions have finished against slower bowlers and he just doesn't suit it.
