***Official*** England in India

Nah generally you can make a judgement about whether someone is in front or whether it's roughly even after Day 1. It being the first day, that judgement can change very quickly the next day but it's still a judgement.

On this deck, I'm with KP: I have no ****ing clue who's in front right now. I say this because we actually don't have any idea about how much reverse swing might have been available, given that Ishant is the only seamer, he didn't bowl for most of the day and, well, he's Ishant.
Well I'll put it this way - I think India had the best of the day today. Whether the advantage of the toss is enough to offset or overtake that and still put England ahead is up for debate of course and we won't really know that until later, but I think India had the better of today.

Can't recall the 4th session of a Test match being quite so crucial in a long time. England could feasibly be 270/5 or 220 - 240 all out by lunch tomorrow.

Well that's kind of my point. It's obviously a **** cricket wicket but that doesn't mean Sehwag won't manage to come out and look completely comfortable. Tendulkar will have a lot of experience batting on wickets like this too; England don't. For all the constant talk about how captains have to be careful about declaring too early in fear of a second innings Sehwag blitz (lol), this is his real utility.
Yep, agree entirely.

For the record Jono, I wasn't calling this a lottery - but I did see a few keep low and Compton was dismissed by one that climbed on him. There was definitely some uneven bounce early on and I think Sharma has been well under bowled, not to mention any other Indian seamer.

I think people are forgetting the sluggish outfield. Fours turning into twos and threes must have cost at least 25 runs or so today.

England will probably be under-par unless they can push this up to 320 or so, but only taking 5 wickets in a day when they need 20 to get anything at all out of this series must leave India somewhat unsatisfied. Very happy for Root, getting to the end without dismissal was exactly what was needed and he never looked as nervous as he must have been. Given that experience of decks like this may well be key he's really shown up a few of the batsmen above him.

Ian Botham is insisting on Sky that the par score for this pitch is 250, and then sitting there smiling while others disagree with him, presumably completely at ease with how he'll be proven right. Having had my laptop break down for most of the day again, my thought for the day is can there please be a red button option that lets you mute individual commentators.

If Sehwag makes all the other batsman look ordinary here, then, it'll be absolutely mammoth as far as his career goes. This is pretty much the most important match India has played since at least 2000. India just does not lose at home. We lost in '04 but that was by arguably the greatest test team that ever took the cricket field.

This fortress should not be breached.

But now all you little ****ers have jinxed him an he probably won't get past 35 (37).

Yeah, it does appear that india had a better day, especially considering that England managed just 200 in almost 100 overs, which is even slow by old standards.

However, if they bat for another half a day, they'll be giving themselves a great shot at earning at least a draw which will be solely because of the cautious approach they employed today.

If they had, instead, tried to score a faster rate, then their innings may have been over by the end of the day with a score of like 270 or it may have been close to it. This would've ruled out a draw completely.

With the way things stand, they have at least kept all three results wide open, two of which will be enough for England to win the series. Moreover, india will now have to play their last innings further ahead in time and in presumably worse conditions than if England had played differently and got bowled out for 270 today alone.

Tendulkar hasn't looked comfortable on any wicket for a long time. It isn't particularly nice to watch but I'd be surprised if he came in on this and looked comfortable.
Scoring runs is one thing and looking comfortable is another.

I believe he was in good nick till Jan 2012 (australian tour), although he didn't get 100s to show for it. (something like what Ponting went through in 2009-10)

An innings that really stands out is the 70 odd scored at the MCG as it was almost flawless and breath-taking.

Returning to tests after a break of several months at his age really finished whatever was left in him.

This is an important match for Tendulkar personally I think. If he fails in this test (in both innings) he may start thinking about retirement. Otherwise, he won't give retirement a thought in the next one year or so I think.

If he fails and india lose, this will be his last test and will be dhoni's last test as captain. It may be his last test as a player too.

sehwag to get out to bresnan playing a rank shot in the 2nd over.

don't think he's played an awful shot thus far in the series iirc, which he typically does every so often, so he's due

Agree with what Pews has said over the past 2/3 pages re. the pitch/Sehwag/Sachin and co..

Said the same a bit after start of play today, but impressions of this pitch would have been different had Sehwag been batting first and firing.

PEWS is frothing at the bung hole (according to himself) at the thought of Sehwag batting on this pitch.

I get the feeling that all this **** frothing will be for nothing

No. I can bet on that. He'll definitely get a farewell series. Whether he deserves that or not is a different story, but he will..
that would be the most selfish thing to do.
he'd be doing his team no favours as the side would be better of grooming a younger player like rahena, r sharma etc

plus he'd be tarnishing his image like never before if he got a whole farewell series (4 tests against australia) instead of maybe just a farewell test.

I didn't mean it as in I was sure he was going to score heaps. I'm "fizzing at the bung" as I said in anticipation of how India handle it, because it's such an unknown at the moment. I'm excited to see what happens.
