Tried to hit it over mid on for six for some reason. If he went cover/extra cover he might have got away with it, though he was completely done in the flight.

Nah, I'm not sure he was actually intending on hitting him over the top when he came down the wicket. He was completely beaten in flight and got nowhere near the pitch of the ball so he decided to try and play a pickup shot on the up. Then he got beaten off the pitch as well. It was just really well bowled and he beat Clarke; no need to be too harsh on the shot, it was born of being beaten in flight in the first place.
