Philander will almost certainly average 25-30 IMO unless he gets knee-jerk dropped from the side before it can get to that point. He's a world class bowler but given that Shaun Pollock for example averaged > 23, Philander is not getting without a couple of points of that providing he plays for a decent length of time. I think he'll average closer to 25 than he does to 30 but I'd be less surprised with him finishing with a 30 average than a 22 average, easily.

from the little ive seen of him, world class batsmen who know where their off stump is can survive against him, and will prosper on flat pitches once they're in. he's going to be an absolute weapon in home games though.

you've just got to accept he isn't going to bowl a bad ball and adjust.

tailenders love to slog him for some reason, and get away with it.

Philander does bowl bad balls though, especially late in the day when he's been out in the field for a while.

Hmm must have missed them. given he's a bit tubby I can see that being the case. I only seem to tune in for his freak spells.

Maybe its my fault he's sucking atm. Whenever I watch him he really tests the off stump awareness of the batsman more than most, and if there's anything in the pitch he will find it.

Unless his career is plagued by injuries, I'll eat my scrotum if Philander averages 30 by the time he is done.

That's definitely still true, but that doesn't mean he doesn't release the pressure with a pie every so often either. It's possible to be a very successful world class (even if short of ATG) bowler at his pace without being a super-accurate, economy-based stock bowler. He's successful because he bowls a very high percentage of excellent deliveries; they may not be quick but the pitch on a perfect length just outside off and move appreciably off the seam in either direction. It's not because he bowls less downright poor balls than other bowlers, because he definitely does bowl his fair share, often in one pretty poor spell towards the end of the day.

Well I've probably not taken into account the ridiculous number of wickets he's already taken and how long it'd take for that to actually blow out to 30 given he's not a spring chicken, but I certainly think he's more likely to average 30 from now until the end of his career as he is to average 22. I'm more thinking something in the 26-28 range myself though, from here on anyway.

Just watching the highlights; man Tahir was presenting them on a silver platter to Hussey & Clarke, wasn't he?

Cannot believe Fat Gray kept him on for so long. Terrible bowling; terrible captaincy.

I'd have a top 3 and a second 3

aus, sa, eng

ind, sl, wi

but India are underperforming and predominantly due to attitude at the top
What about Pakistan mate? They are definitely one of the best countries when playing at non DRS venues (trying to think of a way to say they are great excl in Aus, NZ, Eng and SA).

"There are injury concerns around both Jacques Kallis and Vernon Philander," Cricket South Africa selection convener Andrew Hudson said. "So we have specifically gone for an allrounder, as a like-for-like replacement. Ryan can comfortably bat at No. 7, in addition to his seam-bowling skills."

Ironically enough though, UDRS was a big factor in their series win over England in the UAE.

Yes I was going to say that, with their LBW's that were proved to be pad first.

Is Richie tasting Tahir's performance? Kept saying how good he looked.

Yeah true, my point was mainly that at venues more known for bounce/seam they struggle, but other venues they are definitely one of the best in the world.

Just had a look at the forecast in Adelaide tomorrow and there is unfortunately a reasonable chance of rain in the morning.

Might spice up the Adelaide Highway a bit for the final two sessions.

Never give in.
