Pujara is an ATG batter (or) how long should a career last before it is judged?

After 7 tests, Pujara averages close to 80. this obviously makes him the second best batsman ever, behind Bradman.

For all those CW friends of ours who like to bring up Barry Richards' name every time we select ATG test XIs just because he had one good series and a good FC record, this is a very good opportunity to shoo Pujara into the dream team's middle order ahead of viv, hammond, sobers, lara, g.chappell, tendulkar, ponting and 20 other giants who average only in the 50s.

for the rest of us, this is a good time to remind ourselves that a test cricketer's true worth should not be judged before he completes at least 5 years/40 tests (or 5 years/ 20 tests in case of pre WW2 cricketers). also a good time to remind ourselves that barry richards doesnt deserve to be bunched with hobbs, hutton, gavaskar, hayden, sutcliffe, trumper, greenidge....

he'll do fine imo. he has the temperament, level of concentration and technique it seems to do well overseas too. the other thing that makes him more likely is that he hasn't been spoiled by T20s etc...

Barry Richards played 339 FC games and made 28,258 FC runs at 54.74. There is also WSC to consider;

I can't imagine Hobbs et al begrudging Barry Richards anything.

Thing is, with Richards, many an astute former cricketer has said that he was incredibly good.

It's both of these things together.

Seen some good judges rate Pujara as one of the best 6 batsman of all time, just wondering if it's too early for Abul Hasan to enter the discussion? Such a consistNt batsman who has always performed - is it too early brand Hasan an ATG?

With Barry Richards it was the.combination of that good series, excellent fc career and WSC. But agee that what he isn't quite enough to be ahead of Hobbs, Hutton and Gavaskar. Not sure about the rest though.

about the rest.... hayden did so well on the spinning decks of india and braved the scorching sharjah heat to play a few classic test match innings...

greenidge was the most destructive opener in the world for many many years and averaged 50 after 70 tests when 40 was considered great. the lords double hundred and another 200+ score in new zealand are good enough to keep his name frozen in cricketing history forever.

trumper, from what we have read, would give the jayasuriyas and sehwags a good run for the money.

barry was never tested against the very best in the toughest conditions year after year. And WSC is firstclass cricket, not international. Even there barry played only 5 games. If he is an ATG then pujara is an ATG too.
