Why give Quiney a go when Doolan has made more runs this season, and SA couldnt even dismiss him? its not like Quiney averages 50+ at FC level.

Meanwhile, Smith bowling absolute rubbish.....long hop after full toss, total filth.
Because Quiney has performed at a decent level for 3 seasons, not just half a season.

I'm not following why either Doolan or Quiney should be in the picture at all. Yeah sure they just both scored well against SA, but if you look at the bigger picture you can't get past the fact these guys average 36 ffs. If it's only meant to be a short term solution, then you have to get someone like Dussey. And if it's meant to be potentially for a longer period, then the usual suspects (Hughes, Khawaja etc.) have to be the first options, surely.

With a new ball being used at either end in test matches now, it's important to have three openers in your side.

It's not just about a pecking order, though. You have to match who's most likely to score tons against the SA attack right now. Both Steyn and Philander, for example, look less likely against lefties so that has to come into the decision.

Personally, I think they'll heavily consider Quiney but I don't mind Hughes at 3. He's a bit hit-or-miss right now but he's definitely hitting them well and will be more likely than Khawaja to make it count if he gets away. Quiney's in a similar mould. D Hussey against Steyn is, putting it delicately, risky.

All that said, I dunno if I like any combination against this Saffer attack. Going to be messy.

Incidentally, this has to be the most bat**** boring Aus A game since Atherton was gifted a FC double in Bellerive. Mind you, the last day was lit up by Blewwy's run-a-ball double on the last day so if this one wants to compete, better give it some humpty.

Have the selectors lost their mind?

They will play Cowan as a specialist batsman, but not Watson? What the hell? Watson is easily in the top four batsmen in the country

but John Inverarity's selection panel have discussed Watson's value purely as a top six batsman.

"It has been discussed but there's no firm decision on that," Howard told ESPNcricinfo

The floating of Watson as a batsman is a departure from the team's previous view, which had stressed the importance of having him fit as both a bowler and a batsman. Last summer Watson himself floated the possibility of playing as a batsman during the home Tests as he recovered from a hamstring strain, but that was ruled out.

Reckon there's a strong possibility of Ponting/Hussey going to up 3 and the selectors bringing in Maxwell for Watson (and Starc for Lyon). Maxwell isn't exactly the most loved cricketer on this forum but I'm going to be honest and say I like him and wouldn't hate the move even though I wouldn't have a great deal of faith in it.

I find it interesting that Bailey isn't getting much press. It's presumably because he didn't play the Australia A game, but I don't think he was left out of that game on merit anyway, so that'd be a bit harsh. Tends to back up what Jack said about it being that team being too clever by half.

Yeah I wouldn't mind picking Maxwell if it meant that we played Starc instead of Lyon.
