It's been a massively improved effort, though.

Ah well, just not good enough in the end. Really screwed the pooch yesterday with the bat, not just because we didn't score enough runs but by only batting two sessions we didn't exactly give the quicks much of a rest. Enjoyable test mind, one of the better ones I've watched in the last few years.

Scoreboard reading suggests the chase was at a canter. Winning with 5 wickets in hand and a run rate of over 4.

Quite easy in the end but it certainly didn't look that way when Raina got out. I expect England will play a bit better than NZ did in this test so India needs to raise its game. There are three passengers in the batting right now with Gambhir, Tendulkar and Raina. Hopefully Raina will be dropped but one of the other two will have to find some form against Engand; otherwise it's going to be a tough series.
Still the emergence of Kohli and Pujara is huge and Ashwin and Ojha look very much capable of consistently bowling out sides in these conditions.

There were definite signs of Tendulkar reclaiming his form but one average shot gave it away. Would not mind him sticking on for another series. Gambhir is just awful at the moment, almost upstaging Hughes in terms of slip catch practise. Raina should never be anywhere near the test team. Might as well play 5 bowlers and get Harbhajan in.
So for NZ fans, am I right in saying the next test match is January 2nd in South Africa? I'd like to think that means all these guys will get a full pre-christmas half-season of domestic cricket, which would be fantastic if it happens. But no doubt there's a bunch of t20s of one-dayers to be played somewhere to make sure there's no hope of seeing the domestic competition at full-strength...
Meanwhile, in two weeks time India A play NZ A... with the entire series to be played in Lincoln. Seriously? In mid-September? I know Canterbury is drier than much of the country but that still seems like a weird piece of scheduling. Could be kinda cold for the Indians on a few of those days... Plus they get three weeks in Lincoln, or a centre-less Christchurch. Not the most glamorous of tours but I guess it gives a few fringe players some cricket before the English arrive.

Same old. Really pissed off the bookies where so stingey about nz's chances. I did my usual trick of shifting a crap load of dosh onto an India win, hoping to engineer a miracle, but only got a measly $80 as a consolation prize in the end.
Thought Jeets generally bowled well this series, despite getting taken to the cleaners by Dhoni at the end. With the same level of support from the field and the umpires as the indian spinners received, he would've finished with some pretty decent figures. Really don't want Vettori back now.

According to ftp we're playing 2 tests (sigh), 5 ODIs and a T20 from mid November to mid December in Sri Lanka.

Well I hope so but I find it difficult to believe that England will be worse than NZ even in these conditions. Cook, Trott and Bell are better than any of the NZ batsman even if they aren't particularly good against spin. You could perhaps add Prior to that list.Together they have a reasonable amount of experience in the sub-continent to draw on and they will have a longer series to get accustomed to these conditions. Though I suppose they will miss Strauss and KP and they may have as many as three batsmen who have played very little in the sub-continent.
And you would expect their bowling to be quite a bit better than NZ which is worrying if Gambhir and Tendulkar don't return to some form.
I am annoyed that they wasted these two tests on Raina. It would have been so much better if Rahane or Badrinath had gotten the opportunity to put some runs on the board before the England series.
Oh! And the bigger sigh should come after the 5 ODIs....
I looked on cricinfo and their "future tours" page is very quiet about this one.... But of course the thought of having the best batsmen and bowlers playing on the domestic circuit for a few rounds was just too ridiculous to be realistic.
