Day one summary from the CW England crew

Wonderful from Jimmy. He's so grand. Broad has been brilliant too. I love Swanneh, a real character. Bres is amazing. How good are we that we can leave him out? Peterson is lucky. Smith is ugly to watch. Not enough cloud cover, we've been done over here by the conditions. Can't believe how unlucky we are.

Rinse and repeat for seven hours.

That ball that went for four was 78mph from Broad. Remember when everyone thought the speedguns weren't working too well this summer? Turns out the entire England attack simultaneously lost their nip.

Broad said in an interview today that those speeds are bull, basically.

I think he's trying to bowl slower to get the accuracy and swing.

Not sure if youre serious but it's not unreasonable to suggest they have is it? Finn was clocked well over 90mph in the ODI series so it isn't like the speed guns have been slow for everyone. I presume they're the same devices.

Beauty by Anderson to finish the over.

He's so grand. Petersen is lucky. Etc etc

He probably genuinely believes that the speedguns mysteriously start to underestimate by 5mph every time Anderson, Broad and Bresnan come on to bowl.

But we don't need speedguns to tell us they've all been far less threatening this summer anyway.

Whatever the reason it hasn't been great by Broad, not really threatening at all, needed to bowl better than this considering the hou-ha.

Yeah that's my point. All of them losing a chunk of pace at the same time seemed pretty unnatural. But turns out that's exactly what's happened.

Its hard to say. England don't look like they're bowling too quick. Anderson notably has dropped the pace down to concentrate on swing but unsure about the others.

Ooh, where was that? Got a link?

Broad is best when he pushes up into the low to mid 80s.

Bresnan was the one where you could tell plainly that he wasn't running in and powering through the action like he used to.

As a professional bowler, he should be able to control line and length when bowling flat out, not have to bowl gently to get his accuracy right. IMHO.
Well, many professional bowlers don't bowl flat out, I think McGrath was quite professional, and many others have dropped pace for accuracy, Marshall and Hadlee. Anyway as I say he's not bowling well.

Hmm I don't think so. He's bowling his fastest this summer this morning and also getting more dangerous swing than he has before.
