Dilshan stars in the 2nd game an Samaraweera shows signs of why so many in Sri Lanka rate him more then just a Test match specialist.
It really had to question the selection of teams without knowing who is available, but it does seem Kandurata Warriors could have done with Jayasuriya or Kulatunga instead of Lokuarachchi.
The selection of the U21 players could really make a difference this tournament as they could be cannon fodders or a real contributor.
At FC club domestic level teams get away with throwing school boy grads in the team, as the most teams only need six players to perform in each match and rest are basically gap fillers. Guys that can score runs at domestic level or take a few wickets, but aren't expected to score big hundreds or take 5-fers.
Whereas at this level I don't think you can afford to have a 4 over slot consistently going at 10+ an over, or have top order batsmen that can't at least do a Dan Smith and average 15+ @ 120+ s/r.
Lets go through the first four selection so far:
Lahiru Jayaratne (Basnahira): A fast bowler who opened the bowling, looked ok. Without this restriction Basnahira probably would have played Thurshara, if he was fit. The fact that he opened the bowling shows Dilshan rates him highly, or was that due to lack Jayasuriya at the top of order. If Jayasuriya walked out with Vithanage would he have made the same call.
Kithuruwan Vithanage (Kandurata): A top order batsmen, who opened he batting. Rated highly by mainly in Sri Lanka. Didn't really perform in the first match. But with lack of aggressive batsmen in the squad, may have made the side regardless of the age restriction.
Dhananjaya de Silva (Ruhuna): Basically picked at specialist 10 batsmen. Strange selection to say the least. Even if they didn't fiddle with the lower order the highest he would have batted was 8. With an all rounder in Ramith Rambukwella, a fast bowler in Kasun Madushanka or keeper batsmen in Denuwan Rajakaruna (who is a slightly better batsmen) as the options. They are not going to get much better then a gap filler.
Udara Jayasundera (Nagenahira): Top order batsmen looked really impressive at the top of the order. Just back from a Sri Lanka A tour, would have probably made the side regardless.
The sides that can find some contributors as the U21 players, will go a long way to being successful in the this tournament.
Overall the international players have been pretty disappointing and looking at some other sides, I can't see the quality getting much better. Which is probably a good thing for Sri Lankan cricket as the domestic players may big roles and internationals will be there just to fill he gaps in depth in Sri Lankan cricket.
