McCullum gone. Liked his positive approach as there isn't much happening on this deck, but that ball maybe not quite there for the shot he wanted to execute and smacked it straight to Deonarine at mid-off. Deserved reward for Roach, but he does need to work harder on keeping his front foot behind the line!

Bringing on Samuels at this stage can't be a good idea
Be interesting to see how Guptill plays Samuels, I'm hoping not to see him to persist in plonking his front foot down the pitch and blocking it without any intent in looking to work the ball or use his feet. The first over, fair enough, he's having a look at him and getting use to his action and if he's getting any grip. With so little happening and am hoping to see Guptill a little more pro-active against Samuels, who admittedly is better than a part-time bowler.

Going to be a good test of patience for both sides in this Test it seems. The batsmen are going to have to concentrate for long periods without necessarily scoring at too healthy a rate (perhaps barring Chris Gayle) if the bowling is disciplined, and the bowlers have to keep hitting decent areas and not get frustrated with so little happening off the deck, especially for the quicker men.

Considering the form of the NZ players to date, this score represents a HUGE victory for the kiwi lads. Throw in the thought that the pitch could be a mine field as well then this is a massive points decision to the boys from the land where they like to cut down the tall poppy.

I'm shocked not more NZ supporters are dancing in the street.

Not so soon fella....

Fair play to Guppy, playing a very responsible knock. Thought he was gone burgers with Rampaul's lbw shout though.

As for McCullum, nothing new. No desire to play proper Test cricket. Awful innings, and one I've seen before.

Yeah, not getting too satisfied yet. Think we're all wary of being too bullish; we're still always a chance to collapse to 250 all out from here.

Haha I'm too experienced to jump up and down about this. In fact even if guppy makes a hundred I'm unlikely to praise him. His success is likely predicated on poor bowling and luck than any quality batsmanship.

Tbf he has gone well past what is expected of him. Nearly double from where he flatters to deceive. Go Guppy!

If he scores a ton, it's a proper ton. Roach with a newie, Narine (although he's not looking nearly as threatening), Rampaul reversing it etc. And hopefully it'll be a huge boost of confidence.

I just saw McCullum played a reverse sweep on about 15. Wow.

It'll be a good ton for Guptill, he's been made to work hard for it and his remained disciplined and patient. His circumspect approach has been combined with some good solid strokeplay, his driving off both front and back foot particularly, as you'd expect with Guptill.

His approach to spinners still seems fraught with danger, there's not much in his armoury against slow bowling to discourage them from just landing it in good areas without thinking about too much.

But Guptill deserves plenty of credit for today.

Deserved wicket from Narine, been very good in this spell, got some bounce and turn and caused Taylor some real problems in the last half hour or so, though the actual dismissal was fortunate. Do they keep Narine going till the end now and take the new ball in the morning ?
