**Official** South Africa in England 2012

Strauss has been a bit of a liability for England at the start of big series' in recent times hasn't he? The three biggest series' in the past couple of years for England have been the 2010 Ashes, India and SA (current), and his scores respectively have been 0, 22 and 0 (England batted first in all examples). Not exactly leading from the front, but funnily enough though, they have come back strongly in all of those matches.

Fair enough but when a guy is bowling at mid 70's after tea it means he either hasn't got fitness behind him or something is wrong. You wouldn't expect a guy of his speed to drop off so much pace wise when you only bowl 16 overs in a day would you?

After all the build up and hype he was a massive letdown and if he dropped off so quickly yesterday then what will happen today after his opening spell?
He was only bowling high 70s in his first spell though; it really wasn't a big drop.

So talk about his performance alone then. Why do you keep harping on about how meaningless his previous performances are when they are clearly NOT meaningless. Its test cricket against Australia ffs. And this minnow drew with SA 1-1 in SA!

Reeks of tall poppy syndrome. How dare someone have the stats he has. I now want him to be **** and will gloat when he is ****.

England should recall Peter Martin. I looked at two scorecards yesterday - Kallis' first two tests, and Martin got him out for single figures in both games. Kallis is Martin's bunny.

I don't think we rely too much on him leading from the front in the way Smith does for SA and Ponting did for you (though you had a great side anyway so Ponting wasn't as vital but he usually did anyway) as we are used to him being inconsistant all the time. It is strange, he isn't a bat you think will step up on the big occasion and his captaincy is quite defensive but the team would run through a brick wall for him and it works (apart from in UAE) very well.

He would never make a list of the top 10 great all time captains but has a fantastic winning record.

Crikey i'd forgotten about him. Then again we had so many bowlers that played a handful of games through the 90's it is easy to forget them. So glad those days of mediocre selection of crap bowlers is temporarily behind us. Won't be too long till it returns so we may as well enjoy this current side while we have it.

Yeah indeed. You'd think it could lead to the ship going down with the captain more often, but it just goes to show how self-assured and confident the rest of them are that they can so often hold it together. Reckon it's almost a good team quality as well...not sure I like it when there is too much pressure on the captain to come up with the goods. Pretty much what is going on with the Aus team atm.

People reading far too much into the first days play on a flat pitch imo. Couple of early wickets with the newish ball and its even Rachel from S Club.

I've never seen the South Africans play before, but having seen yesterday's play, I struggle to discern how these guys are paid professionals. I mean, sloppy fielding, couldn't even hit the stumps, couldn't win the toss etc.

Cook is a machine btw, should get 40+ test hundreds by the end of his career
Yeah, barring a career threatening injury he will do. Should end up with amount of runs like Kallis, Ponting, Dravid and Tendulkar as you would think he will play for a long time yet.

Same can be said of Smith for SA if he retains the hunger for it.

Just looking at it Cook will pass 100 tests before his 29th birthday as long as he doesn't get injured. He will be younger than Tendulkar was when he got to 100 tests and seeing as we play so many may even end up playing more than him. Scary.

Amazing that two years ago he looked like being shafted. Really got to know his own game.

Assuming Tendulkar only gets a few more test centuries before he closes up shop, will Cook going at his current rate of conversion equal or better him?

I think the press and some fans made more of it than there was, we didn't really have another option and still don't as an opener. Trott would probably have to do it as Root isn't ready yet and I don't think they rate Carberry as he got dropped quickly.

No. Can't see him getting 50 tons, SRT had 30 after 100 tests and Cook has 20 in 81. You would presume he will drop off a bit in his mid to late 30's (there aren't many players like Gooch who improve as they reach that age) so unless he plays 250 tests i can't see him getting that many.

Will still break all the English batting records and they may never be beaten though.
