Slightly less than the Storm, basically the same though; the News Ltd. paper has more Storm, that's probably because they own it.

Guess the Storm being several thousand times better helps too.

Did wonder if they'd do better tho because union seems slightly exempted from the AFL/NRL squabbling. If one's an Aussie Rules or a league fan I'd guess union is more likely to be your second choice of football code* than league for an Aussie Rules fan and vice versa.

*association football excluded for the purposes of brevity.

As I like to always share my greater wisdom with the cerebral lightweights who plague CW on a regular basis, I would like to inform all League loving members (ie those CW members who aren't lightweights) that I am in Moruya on the south coast for work.

Along the banks of the river is a statue of none other than Michael Weymann, apparently a local product. As most will know, Weymann is out for the year with a knee injury. So of course a local wag has placed a bandage on the knee of said statue.

This is a great country.

For the average one-eyed fan it usually.

AFL or NRL or Union
Daylight
There nothing else on TV
NRL or AFL or Union

Union generally hated as much by one-eyed fans as the other two codes.

But they are all expects on the other sports after watching one game per year.

Didn't really think the article was that whiny or anything. Just seems like he's pointing out Victoria doesn't really care

Still think Aussie Rules misses a trick not having its own SOO comp anymore.

SOO doesn't particularly work when you have a national competition. Almost everyone needs to buy into it for it work. It's easy enough in the NRL. I mean, about 80-90% of NRL fans, the player base and the actual teams playing in the NRL come from QLD and NSW don't they? It's pretty easy to divide that into 2. The leftovers can suck it up.

It doesn't work so much in aussie rules. I mean, straight off the bat, who do Victoria play, SA or WA? And then a Freo fan won't take losing Matthew Pavlich to injury in a VIC-SA like a Storm fan losing Slater to injury would. As a NSWman all a VIC-SA match would do is make me worry like **** about Essendon players getting injured.

The AFL had to disband it's SOO comp. We weren't buying into it. From 1990 eg when the VFL changed it's name to the AFL. The only time the crowd reached above 50,000 was when we were saying goodbye to Ted Whitten. It was an annoyance. A relic from the VFL, SANFL, WAFL days

Still find time for International Rules which is, at best, of curiousity value. Could lose that and replace it with an SOO dealy after the AFL season has ended.

Plus the "Victoria vesus the rest" thang from 2008 (IIRC) seemed to go over well. Obvz "the rest" is a bit amorphous & isn't ideal, but it's probably a fairly genuine split of the playing talent.

Nope. The usual "bring back SOO" talk has started up and that was flagged as an idea. But I'm not really sure it'd work. It's a lot better than the typical one all star team vs the other all star team suggestion though. that'd just go the way of the NHL and NFL all star games, which are mostly jokes because no-one goes 100%. There used to be a pre-season game between an indigenous all star game and one club, but I'm pretty sure that's been disbanded in recent times too.

they'd also be the problem of extending the season. Right now the AFL is telling the players that their requests for a 2nd bye round can't be accepted because we only have the MCG, SCG etc from March til September. We've only got the Dome, Subi and Footy Park to use outside those months. And once Adelaide and Port move to Adl Oval we don't know what's happening to Footy Park. The SANFL is hardly rolling in the money so they'll might sell off Footy Park

Just generally, for a lot of reasons, SOO fits the NRL perfectly, and SOO doesn't fit AFL. the attitudes the anzac test + city-country receive is how SOO and AFL go.

Works as a once in the decade thing (maybe). Yearly thing would just be a drag

Now let's all listen to Phil Gould and his stupid cliches

Hayne, Jennings, Carney, Farah - how do you reckon they'll go? I reckon Carney will go alright...the other three I'm not sure.

Jennings is an odd call even by Pricky's standards. Hayne's class, so it makes sense on a "form temporary" basis. Carney's been in good nick of late, hasn't he?

Big Tony Williams likely to be underdone too. Has he played since his enforced rest?

Yeah Carney's good. Always been a good footballer, so hopefully he keeps himself out of trouble from now on. Would like to see him have a big game tonight.

We've just had a rather "tired and emotional" Matty Johns interviewed on our Sky coverage.

Brian Carney even signed off the interview by saying "I'll let you get off and enjoy the Eithad's hospitality".
