So what? Isn't the point that he was nowhere near as good as Taylor, Slater, Boon, Waugh, Waugh, Border, Martyn, Hayden, Langer etc etc? You know, the blokes he played against?

8-) Most players aren't as good as that lot...

What did Broad do differently later on in the day, or was it a case he found a few edges where they'd been going past before?

His cover drive was definitely superior than any of the above

Brilliant player, cruelly cut short by plastic fingers, and the pressures of a nation

He just seemed to find his rhythm, he started to find that good fuller length with a much better 4th stump line that got the batsmen playing more at. Earlier on his pace also seemed down, dropping into the high 70's on a few occasions but once it seemed to click for him he was consistently in the mid 80's.
A bit like last year, he just hasn't had enough overs under his belt since he got injured in SL and the ones in did bowl for Notts, he was well under par.

Did he change ends? Sometimes at Lord's the slope effects the bowlers' rhythm. I see the forecast is overcast for Friday. Will be interesting to see what the Windies bowlers can do. Rampaul being out is a blow to them.

Broad and Bresnan both looked quite under cooked actually, WI will perhaps be kicking themselves for getting in and getting out. Especially Bravo and Barath. I thought Anderson was easily the pick, though that is a familiar tale in recent months at least.

Interesting comments from Holding regarding where he rates Chanderpaul against the other WI great batsmen. Nothing controversial or anything like that, and I gather most of us would agree with his comments, but nevertheless always intriguing to hear.
I think Holding, much like many experts, tends to suffer from generational bias. Its fair game to put some of the players that he played with or against on a pedestal, because the reality is that he played during one of the most gifted decades in international cricket. And he does have a point that Chanderpaul bats for himself more than he does for the team. But I'd be hard pressed to understand the logic behind Dez Haynes rated as a better player than Chanderpaul. Nothing backs it up. Whether Chanderpaul has a Type A or Type B personality doesnt detract from the fact that he has been consistently scoring runs all over the world in all seasons. The guy is playing against arguably the best bowling attack in the world currently in their own backyard and still has a * alongside his name and deserves whole load of credit for it. The fact that he is nearly 38 and has been doing the job for nearly 20 years is not something to be taken lightly.

Tbf made this comment when he compared Viv and Lara on another rung and better match winners. He hadn't yet got to Haynes (and I think he mentioned Greenidge too?).

Good point though. I haven't seen Greenidge or Haynes play, and haven't done a proper analysis (read contemporary opinion and intense analysis of stats) to confirm either way that he's better or not as good as those two.

Started bowling to the Windies tail (starts from Samuels) helped. Still trying to work how Sammy got out, you can’t do that if you tried 100 times. Thought Anderson was more threatening, particularly to Shiv.

Wasn't just that, you could quite clearly see that he improved throughout the day. Jimmy on the other hand started off very well but I thought he started bowling too short as the day went on and the big outswingers to Shiv where mostly harmless.

On the whole the bowlers went pretty well but it was quite evident from watching that it was the first test of the summer and they all looked a little short on rhythm and they're only going to get better as the summer goes on.

Pretty scary from a Windies POV that England looked a bit undercooked yet they still got 9 wickets and that on a flat surface. Where is Windies Weather? Guy is more like Fair Windies Weather. Front up dude!

Broad said the pitch quickened up by the time they took the new ball and our batsmen need to be aware of that when they bat.

After tea Anderson bowled a lot of impressive looking balls, but I didn't find it particularly likely that he would get a wicket the way he was bowling.

Weather staying helpful, I think Roach and Edwards (just my gut) might spring a surprise or two here. I was very impressed by the lengths Roach was bowling against Aus, and if he can get it a few inches further up still in Eng, he'll be a handful.
