Les Ames

Tempted by Walcott, but unconvinced that we should pick a keeper who didn't play half his games at the position. Can't really go with a specialist keeper ala Knott either as we picked bowlers from 8-11.

Clyde Walcott. ATG batsman and very under rated wicket keeper. Kept brilliantly to Ramadin and Valentine for countless overs, better keeper than Flower and better batsman. Additionally the only reason that he kept for only 15 tests was because he developed back problems in Australia, not because he was dropped for performance reasons.

IMO, this side needs a counterattacking wicketkeeper to bat 7, capable of batting strongly with the tail, or to get the side back on track if Marshall, Hadlee et al. destroy the top order.

With that in mind, I'd pick Denis Lindsay, just ahead of Ames.

I have to go for Walcott here. His keeping skills were good and this side's tail is long.

The Ames v Walcott battle is an interesting contest.

Near identical records as keeper-batsman, however Ames has the longer career with the gloves.

I rate Ames far higher with the gloves, but Walcott is a genuine ATG batsman and this team desperately needs the batting, in my opinion.

However, much like Sangakkara you need to rate Walcott on his performance as a keeper-batsman. His record is merely very good, it's as a standalone batsman he is ATG material.

I have no issue with his selection however. Rated highly by his peers with the gloves.

Good point. Interestingly enough, Ames' average is 44 whilst playing as the designated keeper- 4 runs higher than as a specialist batsman.

Every one's record has holes. Walcott played his first series in Oz with a badly injured back which also forced him to give up the gloves.
