Mumbai Indians don't need Pollard. He's got a poor average of 21 playing for them, as against higher averages for non-WI (national) teams. The domestic option (SA Yadav) is just fine, and you can open up a place in the bowling lineup for either Johnson or McKay or even Thissara.

When you bat 5-7 in T20 and bat in the last 5-10 overs you're never going to average too many. He is also an excellent fielder and another bowling option who has done well in T20. I'd also definitely play Johnson. Unlike test cricket he seems to have control of the white ball and the left arm slingy action is hard to hit.

If needed, Tendulkar (or should I say Ambani) would have promoted him higher up, even to open the innings, but it hasn't happened at all. Mumbai have often lost a rush of wickets, getting him in a lot earlier- and he's out soon. Players like Pollard tend to get fifties at over two runs a ball, but Pollard's poor batting record for MI suggests he's not getting the job done.

What's surprising is that average (or less) or misfit-for-T20 players tend to raise their game several notches in the IPL- CSK's Albie Morkel and Dougie Bollinger (or even Harbhajan Singh) are examples.

I'd have thought Pollard, Johnson and Malinga were shoe-ins for the foreign player slots.

Who else they go with will be interesting. I don't know much about their strength in Indian players. I'd be definitely trying to get Perera the odd game and give Johnson/Malinga a rest somewhere as they should cruise a top 4 slot. Perera will click somewhere along the line and become a very useful T20/ODI player, it will probably be another season or two but who knows.

If Mumbai go with Levi I'll be surprised if he comes off straight away. He's not very experienced and it will be a huge change going from South African conditions and non-turning spinners to the sub-continent.
